I own a nexus one
nexus one's are currently the only phones that get android updates the day they come out. All other phones (droid, mytouch, evo 4g, etc) have to wait for the manufacturers (htc, samsung, etc) to update it for them.

A new android update (2.3, gingerbread) was announced today. I've been waiting for it for a while. A blog (engadget) said that the update was coming over-the-air, and after hearing that, I wasted two hours trying to get the update on my phone. After 2 hours, a member of the android team tweted that engadget was lying, and the update won't be out for a couple of weeks.

Is it really that hard?
