    Secret US Embassy Cables

As some of you may or may not know, a certain someone in the military released over 250,000 government documents to WikiLeaks, New York Times, and many other media organizations.

    View here: http://cablegate.wikileaks.org/

This is pretty remarkable, but also controversial. Yes, we have a freedom of speech, but is this going to far? Should the public be able to view international issues like his? Could this be detrimental to any relationships we, or any countries for that matter, have?

My personal take is, we shouldn't have access to this. This is too much information to throw at the public at once. Let's hear what you all think.

If they wouldn't have been keeping secrets from us in the first place, the information wouldn't be getting thrown at us all at once. I think almost any government documents should be accessible by anyone if they so choose.

It is good in a way that the public know what is happening, and that the government cannot hold any secrets from us, however it is bad as foreign countries (particularly those who are rivals) can also access this information.

I think this leak is a threat to national security, in fact its a threat to world security. I'm not saying this is going to be apocalyptic, world war, nuclear or anything drastic like that. I am merely saying that the information will be documented and scrutinized by every single government, I am sure there are many things the various countries won't be happy with. This in turn creates alot of problems. (diplomatic embargos for one example)

I think you just made that up, unless you can show your sources.

Completely made up. I read an article in the New York Times. They have accused a military man (sergeant I believe) of releasing the files.

No, just now the public has proof.

Not completely. You would be nieve to think that other countries don't act in the same ways we do, or even knew what we were up to in the first place. It may hurt some relations, but importantly embarrass some countries government.

Sounds about right. It will never happen though. Hundreds of thousands of people hold these articles on documents or on their computers. They will keep being uploaded as fast as the government takes them down.

WikiLeaks was hit by another blow from a denial-of-service attack today.

Though the attack initially focused on cablegate.wikileaks.org – the site WikiLeaks is using to host its cache of diplomatic cables – the attackers eventually moved on to wikileaks.org. Earlier today, WikiLeaks posted a message on its ******* feed that the attack had exceeded 10 Gigabits per second.

“The attacks are likely to be symbolic more than anything else, as several large media groups have already been supplied with the full set of leaked messages,” blogged Paul Mutton of Netcraft.

A similar situation arose Nov. 28, just hours before WikiLeaks began posting more than 250,000 U.S. embassy diplomatic cables online. In that case, a ******* user going by the name th3j35t3r (“Jester”) claimed responsibility for the attack in a tweet, and listed a number of other sites along with the message “TANGO DOWN” to indicate they had been taken down as well.

As of publishing, both the wikileaks.org and cablegate.wikileaks.org sites were back online.

The government should keep so me stuff from the general population. Some things are best left unknown to the public. Like if a commander makes a decision in the heat of war that ends up killing US soldiers. It is technically the commanders fault but war isn't perfect, quite the opposite. If the field report was released then the families of the lost soldiers could demand the commander be released, court martialed, etc.

As to things like the Chineese ordering an attack on Google's servers (this is one of the leaks) I think the US has a right to know what other countries are doing that are affecting US citizens.

    THIS^

To have diplomats in each other countries that can type and send messages confidential home, is an important part of being able to have a relationship between the two countries.
This will gain more attention in the media and to the public than the goverment will.

Maybe... he might end up in a swedish prison. Anyone here about Michael Moore paying for his bail and declaring his full support? I bet I can guess what his next documentary is on...
