Should we clone extinct animals back?

Imagine going to your local zoo, and instead of seeing lions or tigers. You see dinasours, dodo, woolly Mammoth, ect. Well it is not impossible with the power of cloning, we can look for DNA of extinct species and try to piece it all together and recreate that animal. Do you think scientists should be allowed to bring back extinct animals, is it like morally wrong or something?

Should we clone extinct animals back?

For the purposes of science and study yes. But for commercial reasons like in Jurassic Park, No.

Ever heard the phrase "What happened happened the way it did and couldn't have happened any other way (Matrix Reloaded)". Right now is the time of whatever is on earth now. The dinosaurs and mammoths had their time but they couldn't survive. If anyone here is familiar with Darwin's work, the species capable of adapting and surviving live on and the ones that can't die out.

Should we clone extinct animals back?

Unless we're cloning them for medical purposes (ex: an extinct animal had the answer for cancer,) I believe not

Should we clone extinct animals back?

Yes, just for the fact that it would be cool as shit to have a velociraptor as a pet.

But can you really consider human slaughtering a species part of a natural cause?

Like the dodo, and the mammoth.

There's a difference between animals that were outcompeted - dinosaurs - and those that we eradicated recently, such as the dodo, passenger pigeon and so on.

Regardless, in most cases the habitats that these animals existed in simply don't exist anymore - there is nowhere on earth that a tyrannosaurus could live in. And the cats, dogs and rats which wiped out the huge numbers of species including the dodo are now pretty much everywhere on the planet, meaning a large scale program of reintroduction would be impossible.

Nature had a reason to wipe out these animals and I say that we dont mess with nature.

That would be nice to get back species we idiotically killed off that were utterly harmless like sea cows etc.

I agreed with lilpjer. Species like the tasmanian wolf and dodo birds CAN still live in our present day world are feasible animals to have around.

Dinosaurs however cannot so there's no point. And after watching Jurassic park, it wouldn't be too attractive.

I say no. I am a pretty firm believer in Darwinism/Social Darwinism, so I believe they are extinct for a reason.

Although, I will admit it would be pretty cool to see a real-life dinosaur. :D

To people talking about Darwinism: Yes, they were inferior species and thus died out in nature. But we're talking about bringing them back into a Zoo here, and Darwinism doesn't apply in a Zoo. So the question here is ethics of Zoos, and has nothing to do with Darwinism. Unless we release them into nature (then "survival of the fittest" would take care of it automatically anyway, and weed out the species if it isn't fit, so what difference would it make?).

We don't need them. Clearly w're just fine without them so there is no reason to bring them back.

I agree. Also, it would cost a lot to find the DNA that we would use to clone, and where the heck would we keep woolly mammoths, tyranosaurus rex's and things like that?

Should we clone extinct animals back?

I say no as before it has been stated that they have died out for a reason for example not adapting to change. If they had adapted then they would not be extinct unless it was from us wiping them out.

Should we clone extinct animals back?

Mixed feelings about this. If we do clone extinct animals, just think of how much money it would cost, which could be put to something useful (fighting poverty, etc). Once cloned, what would we do with the animals? Put them in a zoo? For what purpose? Yes they would be cool to look at, but I think there wouldn't be enough profit from cloning them and it would really serve no purpose as they will just end up being extinct again unless the human race goes completely bankrupt.

There's nothing morally wrong with it. Instead you should be asking, how much is it worth dollar wise.
