Is Jail/Prison a good punishment?

Jail is also a place where they teach you how to work with your hands and give you skills that you can use to benefit society and essentially start fresh.

I'm not saying all scenarios are like this but Hollywood really does exaggerate jail life.

 

That means about 1 in 1000 people are in jail. That's not good at all.

 

Well, they only get them usually for good behavior or something like that. A rapist, molester, or murderer would not get those privileges. Plus, the prison guards just don't go handing them computers, they have family members bring them in and they are most likely spent with the money that they have no use for except that since they are in prison lol.

 

Personally I think only life-changing criminals should go to prison like Child Molesters/Rapists/Murderers because they really damaged someones life especially if it's a child who got molested. This should teach them not to ever do anything like that again because-is it really worth raping someone, or killing someone? No.

Edit: Also minor criminals (IMO) like marijuana users shouldn't be sent to prison for smoking an herb that causes less problems over time than Tobacco or Alcohol. They're taking up space for the real criminals.

 

No jail isn't a good punishment.

Poor people -
No TV
Hardly any food
No or hardly any showers

Jail -
TV, computers, ipods etc
3 meals a day
access to good clean facilities

I could probably think of A LOT more but they were right off my head and I am currently in a rush.

 

This is what i was thinking, if it's a poetty theft or soemthing, just throw them ina cell for a while, but for god sake take away the tv's and consoles -.- but yeah, for murders and things, get rid of them... Completely....

 

in my opinion no , like most people that go to jail go back again so obviously its not a good enuff punishment , they need to make it more harsh specially for the people that commit big crimes

 

No i think jail is useless, if you murder someone you should have the death sentence. Jails Mates have so much freedom now, its more of a holiday :/.

 

Jail turns small-time criminals into hard-time ones.
If there was still hope for you, After having been in prison for a cetain amount of time it's gonne be nearly impossible to adjust back to the 'normal society'.

 

Or they can form a country with ridiculous censorship.

At the very least, It protects society from criminals for a period of time. I would think that the reality of prison would be a deterrent, but it doesn't seem to deter many. If you have a better solution that would spare tax payers, victims, and citizens, please share it with your Governor.

 

I don't think people in this thread knows how prisons work. They get to use the few electronics they have to keep in touch with reality. Jail time can make a person go crazy, and it is rewarded on good behavior, and taken away on bad behavior. It's not given to you the first day your in.

 

It also turns hard criminals around into better people.

 

The thing is nowadays jail is a joke to a lot of them. Not many of them fear jail. They need to make it were people fear going to jail and the crime rate would go down a lot.

 

Not really. It turns hard people into harder people. If you are in a max security jail, because you are a "hard" criminal, you must be strong to survive. For minor offences, like drugs, the prison system does not help at all. I forget the statistic, but a large amount of drug offenders will go to jail more than once.

 

Yes, it doesn't matter what they have, talk to any prisoner, most of them will say it sucked.

 

Yes, fear is how you run a society.

Not really. Even if they serve a long ass prison sentence, they will eventually be released and they could still commit their crimes

 

As long as it separates criminals from the rest of society, then yes. I can care less of what goes on in the jail.
