Tech CEO Sentenced to 5 Years in IP Address Scheme – Krebs on Security

As botters know, masking our IP addresses is a key technique to avoid detection and linking of accounts, but we are not the only market to depend on this technology, we are one of the most harmless users of this tech.

A huge provider of IP addresses, who setup different fake companies to request them from the source NFP : ARIN, was charged with 5 years. The main use of the IPs seems to be spam.

This is of course mostly relevant to suicide botting farms, which operate with huge numbers, and not to main and alt botters, who are free to use their home IP, or in the most extreme cases, public wifis or mobile networks.

At this point it's hard to say whether masking IP addresses is Zamorakian magic or Guthixian magic (as many privacy oriented providers like Firefox, Mullvad or Mysterium might claim. but it's safe to say that it's not the way of the Light, and as such, Saradomin hath striked a king of proxies today.

Slight correction, this provider supplied IPs to VPNs, not SOCKS5 proxies.

SOCKS5 is a much more detectable technology than VPNs, so they are less dangerous in that sense. VPNs nowadays command a greater share of the market, for both legal and illegal uses.

It is precisely this coexistence between legitimate and illegitimate usage that allows VPN to be so powerful. Since it is marketed to end users (see expressvpn on osrs youtubers), it becomes unwise for platforms to outright ban ip blocks identified to be of a VPN provider.

I guess the only point in using proxies would be to avoid chainbans, which seem to be very rare now adays.

Depends on the tech, SOCKS5 are bypassable, it depends on the client's implementation whether Jagex can see the original IP or simply see that you are using a SOCKS5 proxy.

VPNs though are very state of the art technology which are mostly indistinguishable from a real connection. The method platforms use to detect them is by tagging the ip blocks. Residential tactics or fresh blocks bypass this measure.
