I have been thinking about starting it some time (I tried the trial and hated it but a friend said I should try the real game before I decide on it.) Is there a set purpose or is it like Runescape where you just play to get rich and have high levels? Also thoughts on if it's a good idea to start or just scratch the idea?

I'm not spending money on a guide yet, still seeing others opinions.

Haha, you don't need a guide to play WoW, especially if you're playing with someone you know.
There's a thing called RaF where you get super fast xp if you level with a 'friend'.
WoW's a very fun game to play with too many things to do to mention.
I've been playing for about 3 years now so you can add me on MSN if you have any questions and whatnot, I'd be glad to help. ;)

First off whereas the aim in runescape is generally to achieve the highest level and lose a lot or make a lot of gold in the process, WoW generally revolves around aquiring gear, most of which cannot be bought. You do so by killing bosses which are generally more complex and require more teamwork then in rs. If your playing with mates there is viable 2 player content too.
If your playing solo for the first time it may seem unfamiliar but a game with millions of followers speaks for itself.

Also the game doesn't revolve around gold, you wont need it untill level 80.

Gold Guides are pointless in WoW, you can easily make a few k's without even trying.

And with the release of cataclysm gold will be even easier to get ahold of.

Think about it this way, whats the point of any game? It for your entertainment. All game's don't have a point, to get to the highest level or achieve the most money. It's purely for entertainment purposes. =)

Theres lots of reasons to play WoW.. out of all the MMO's it's probably the most varied of the lot. If PvP is your thing then you can do arena 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 competatively and get good gear and weapons from winning. Or if you're not as hardcore in your PvP you can do battlegrounds which are great fun and don't tend to require an awefully good set of gear or skills.
Even if PvP is not your thing theres a shit ton of PvE aspects to the game, raids, dungeons all to get gear and if you're good enough titles and achievements. Even if you get bored of dungeons and raids then theres 1000's of achievements which may take your interest, and some well repsected titles can be gained through larger, meta achievements.
Theres a lot to the game really and it would take ages to explain but if you want any advise or help then PM me on sythe and i'll be happy to answer anything :)
