New Zealand Breakfast show host taking it too far?

Basically, Paul Henry is on a live breakfast show and finds the spelling of this Indian woman's name funny. See video below.





Initially, he was stood down for 2 weeks but the latest is that he has resigned. I'm from New Zealand and political correctness has gone to new extremes lately. When ethnic minorities here pull out white jokes they get into little, if any trouble. When a white man laughs at an indian name all hell breaks loose. He's been the subject of alot of discussions on media lately, and I personally think there has been way too much publicity about it.
Are people over-reacting? Or has he taken it too far?

 

I think the whole situation is just horrible - It's not even that it's 'racist' anymore, it's the fact that adult human beings are defending something so utterly devoid of wit. It makes me ashamed to be a New Zealander at times when I see the countless number of people supporting him with groups on facebook such as "Paul Henry for PM", "Boycott Breakfast until Paul Henry comes back" and "BRING BACK PAUL!" - yes and the televised hangings too!.

I welcomed his resignation.

 

Everyone is being over-dramatic with their opinions regarding this. I don't see it as a problem. People laugh at worse things, like Dane Cook.

LOL! the name is actually pretty funny, there was this kid at my school named parkshit and got a lot crap for his name

it was funny for me until he said ... shes indian so its appropriate as in reffering to the color of shit and her being brown...

after that he deserves to get fired.

 

As funny as it was and to be honest if I was doing it I would have laughed too the fact that he CEPT laughing like after it was over was what made it worth being kicked off the show.

 

I laughed while watching the movie, and thought it was even funnier that he kept laughing about it.

He wasn't laughing at the person just thought dikshit was a funny word\name.

 

Saw the video ages ago. Found it quite funny, but then wondered why he just dug a hole even deaper.

When he mentioned about it being appropriate because she is from India, I facepalmed in real life.

 

Eh Finn, the hilarity of the name "Dikshit" I can understand - I'd be sure to laugh at that as well - but then when he began to talk about how because she was Indian it would be appropriate because she would be "dick n' shit"... I found that way out of line for a live TV presenter.

 

Funny name, but obviously he should not have gone on about it like he did, being on tv.

As for it being in the media to much, this is my first time hearing about it.

 

He could have been less of a dick about it, but what do you expect?

 

I think he should be forgiven for that laugh at 0:24.

Over-dramatic. He was just enjoying himself, an easy apology for him being misunderstood should have solved the issue. People over-react and need to enjoy themselves.

People need to lighten up, it's not like this guy started being directly racist. The name that he is laughing at is inevitably going to cause people to laugh. It is a huge over reaction.
