I've finally turned 15 years old and I've been waiting to have the chance to be employed for years. I was offered a job at an Australian chain-supermarket (woolworths) and I knew there would be plenty of advantages including experience, a few bucks to buy clothes and gifts etc and 5% off groceries for mummy-dear . However, today I found out I'd only be paid $7 ($6 USD) per hour with a crummy uniform and I'll probably be ridiculed by mates that often buy from there.

Should I take the job? Brendan W (an aussie friend of mine) makes much more than that at a clothing store and he's around my age. Unfortunately I won't be able to work in those for at least a while so I'm really not sure..

Also, do you work? If so, how much do you earn an hour (unless you regard this as private). Do you like the uniform? Are you on good terms with the boss?

 

You're better spending the time you'd be working at woolies doing something that offers higher returns in the future.

If you took all those hours and instead perhaps learned to code a language proficiently, or develop some graphic design skills you could see entry-level payment a lot higher than jobs like Woolworths with no prerequisites to undertake work.

The job doesn't even have to be based around computers, though I suggest it as the ratio of rate of payment to the amount you'll have to learn is remarkably in your favour (depending on where you are in Australia, people pay stupidly large amounts for IT-based work). Plus you get to learn, and possibly work, from the comfort of your own home.

Oh also, if you live in Sydney you should consider selling weed.

I suppose I could go for an IT job but the jobs I'll be doing now are just some experience, some money. Later on I'd like to obviously attend uni. and study something to do with business/finances.

honestly you're lucky to be offered a job at all, jobs are hard to come by these days. but you don't want to stop looking for a job mate, still apply to better opportunities, its better to be looking for a better job while you still have a job.

 

$7 an hour? Wow. I have friends who have told me working at Woolies is an OK job, but $7 an hour isn't right. Keep looking around for another month or two. You'll probably find a better opportunity.

What Uni are you looking at? I'm doing B of IT and B of Commerce at University of Sydney and I've found amazingly large amounts of small-business based IT work that has provided income while still studying at uni.

 

wow, see thats why im glad the US had minimum wage. id take the job anyways though itll look good when u go to apply for a new job. and not only that, but u will have money.

 

For Gods sakes take the job for now! Jobs seriously are harder to come by you can find another whilst working?!
You shouldnt judge a jobs opportunity by starting wage, raises come with dedication and with time.
Look...no matter what your friends say by the end of the week you will be a whole pay cheque richer than them. so take it and tease them about being unemployed!

 

When i was your age, I would have taken any job i could get. i highly suggest you take it. who cares about the uniform? if your friends start making fun of you, just pull out your wallet and show them how much more cash you have than them.

right now i work as a manager at Walgreens. I like the Uniform for the most part (basically a light blue dress shirt and dress pants with a tie) except when the weather makes it inappropriate. I am on very good terms with my boss. I do things that i know need to be done without being asked, I also get my assigned tasks done on time and readily accept more. Basically the way i see it is that the boss's have their pick of the liter. you gotta be the best if you wanna secure yourself a job before the other guy.

By working my ass off, I get compensation by getting to take vacation whenever i want, take an extended lunch break, and some other stuff while still getting paid as much as the Manager's of other Walgreens stores

 

ur 15 why you even thinking about university $7 is still money unless your doing something you hate then quit but it's decent for a first job I guess.

 

Job isn`t really something to get excited about at your age i would concern myself more with going to the gym getting built like a tank...

Trust me you will be working your entire life its one of those things u don't need to really rush into like driving... I use to think driving would be so much fun...Sigh..

 

EDIT: In more simpler terms I would take the job, the extra cash will always help. (I edited my post because I don't want people knowing about my job.)

 

I love how many people are posting how hard jobs are to come by.

This is totally dependent on the country, state and even area that you live in. Seeing as the majority of people posting it are in the US, where the unemployment rate is almost double ours and the minimum wage (once you hit 18) runs at $7.25/h compared to our $15/h, it's hardly offering viable advice without knowledge on what employment is like in his area.

I could set out today to get a job and probably land multiple at McDonalds, Woolies, Coles or some other place hiring by the end of the day. Jobs seem to be a lot more readily available here than the places others are posting from.

 

Australia has barely been affected by the recent economic troubles at all, guys.

I wouldn't bother taking it. As others have said, you're better off learning new skills in your spare time. The only thing you'll get out of working there is a money, and evidently not a lot of it.

 

Always take the job. Once you've had a little experience under your belt, future employers will look at that and be more likely to pick you because you know how to work. Just take the job and be able to use it on a resume and for references later.
