Halo 3 MLG Guide [Tips,Tricks,Rules +more!]

Hello everyone! I'm Weasel2013. I've played Halo 3 since it's release, and MLG is by far my favorite gametype. It is also the only gametype you're going to make any serious money playing. This guide is designed to do the following...

1. Explain to you what MLG even is.
   
2. Explain what the goal of going to MLG tournaments is.
   
3. Educate you on the rules of MLG gameplay.

I also end the guide with a wall of text filled with tips and tricks i've learned over my years of playing.







What is MLG? MLGPro.com is a website that runs real life as well as online tournaments to play several different games; however, they concentrate most of their resources to Halo tournaments. Through them, professional gamers have arose that make a very healthy living off of doing nothing but playing video games.



That is the main stage. Where every aspiring Halo player wants to stand. People have won over 20,000 dollars on that very stage! Of course, getting there isn't easy.

You must purchase a team pass. These vary in price from tournament to tournament, but have a uniform price for everyone.

You must purchase a hotel room. (unless you live close enough not to need one). These vary depending on where you stay, how long, etc. Sometimes the venue MLG rents out has reduced fees for competitors.

Then it gets complicated. You'll start out in the amatuer bracket. When you lose once, you go the losers bracket. If you lose a match in the losers bracket, you're eliminated from the tournament. If you place high in either bracket you accumulate points. With a certain amount of points you can make the transition to the Pro bracket, and play some of the best players in the WORLD.



That man is Tom "Tsquared" Taylor. He's been the figurehead for Halo 3 basically since Halo 2, his throne was undisputable in Halo 3. He's even done commercials for G4TV! While you may not become as famous as him, every player in the top 8 teams name is known and respected (usually )



These are the updated MLG rules. If you're new to MLG, basically...

110% Weapon Damage
90% Shield recharge rate
No assault rifles, shotguns, needlers, gravity hammers, etc.



The most used weapon in MLG gameplay. It's the weapon you start with in every game. The battle rifle. It's possible to kill people in only 4 bursts. (It's important to note the carbine is technically superior to the BR, it is possible to kill a person in 4 BR Bursts or 7 Carbine Shots, 7 carbine shots can be let out quicker than 4 BR bursts can...)
It is very important to master this weapon. If you don't have a very good BR, you won't get very far in MLG. It has been estimated top 16 pros 4-shot people 95% of the time, the other 5% being 5-shots. Do not underestimate anyones BR. If you're trying to practice your Battle Rifle, don't give 'noobs' first two shots or something, pros will not miss, and if you're used to playing people you can go easy on you'll be in for a big surprise.

Strafing is highly important. It's any movement you make during a gunfight. There are two main types, short strafe and long strafe. Meaning...

Short strafe: Moving side to side very little, in jerking motions

Long strafe: Moving side to side dramatically, in long strides


It is important to find which one is easier for you, and throws your shot off less. Two things to consider throwing into your strafe...

Gandhi jumping: Jump, and constantly press crouch while in mid-air, causing your body to "spasm/jerk" in the air.

Crouching: When you're on the ground, throw in a crouch. This can cause bullets to zoom right over you! (this does not work if you are taking damage at the time)

I knew most of these tips and tricks before hand but nice guide. There was a lot of white text that wasn't very appealing to my eye but besides that good guide.

 

I know, it wasn't hard to put together...there wasn't a solid guide on helping a player do the basic transition from social --> MLG so I put this together.

 

I suppose I didn't expect this to get that many replies..being outdated with Halo Reach and what not.
