    Don't Ask Don't Tell

DADT is an American military policy; open gays are not allowed in the military, but closeted ones are. It operates on the premise of not asking of your sexuality, or telling of it.
It's become a hot topic as of late and I was wondering if I could see how the SFA members feel about it.

My personal opinion is that DADT is fine as is. I have nothing against GLBT folks. My real question is that why do you need to openly express your sexuality? Why is not being asked or not telling people that bad? Is it that oppressive feeling?

Why are open homosexuals not allowed into the military? Its stupid, Preferred Sexuality won't have no effect when the guy's covering your back while your getting shot at.

Surely, its unconstitutional? Its discriminatory and diminishes equality.

I don't see how your sexual preference has anything to do with the military. I don't support homosexuality as is (yeah yeah, I know), but that's another argument.

As a member of the Army. I would rather NOT have open gays in the military.

If they had open gays they would have to make an entire different basic training spot for them. I personally would not want to shower with homosexuals. Sexual assaults would rise. And for the gay persons sake, they would get their ass kicked by others.

If you were truly in the Army for the right reasons, then you would realize that Gays are citizens, and they have the right to defend their nation that they love.

I'm not sure, DADT is a step-up from when gays weren't allowed in at all.
Here in Minnesota, 400,000 anti-gay DVDs were sent out.
That really irked me. This was in response to DADT being repealed.

    First, no.

Second; the world isn't perfect. Everyone would like to "get along", but there will always be problems accepting certain people.

People should really stop caring about homosexuals. It should not matter if you are gay, straight,or bisexual you should be able to fight for your country. I do not think we (humans) would be nearly as acceptive of difference in society if it wasn't for homosexuals and we would have WAY more prejudice and racist people. With this said i think open homosexuals should be aloud to be in the army as they are humans and have the same rights as heterosexual people.

    answering your question:

From having both homosexual and heterosexual friends i have some experience of how they feel and when my gay friends came out of the closet it made them feel WAY better. I had one friend that was on the verge of killing himself because the load of not being able to tell his close friends the way he was without fear of judgement/harassment was to much for him to handle

Obviously. But repealing this won't make persecution go away.

It isnt just the soldiers, its elementary kids, its high school kids, its college students, its people in your everyday work environment. But in the army you are forced to share close quarters with others. Example: In basic training we line up literally "nut to butt" to get in the showers. It is already awkward enough being that close to a straight male. A homosexual would be much worse.

Why do they need to hide their sexuality? It's a baseless rule.

Its going to be repealed by Congress in the nearish future. It IS unconstitutional. It doesn't matter that it would be awkward for people. They have a right to serve their country and you shouldn't have a problem with that. You lose all privacy when you join the military and if you don't like it, then you shouldn't have joined.

Why do they need to proclaim their sexuality?

The military feels incredibly conservative, gays should know what they're getting into.

It'd essentially be living a lie, or not being honest with themselves.
Why should these people not be allowed to join the military because of a factor (sexual orientation) which can't be changed?

People are assumed to be straight. When you are gay, you are living a lie if you do not tell people that you are gay. Living a lie fucking sucks, and no one should have to.

Possibly because some people would feel uncomfortable joining the military knowing one of the men they shower with is gay. It's not worth letting a few men into the military to lose potentiality thousands of others.

You aren't asked about your sexuality, and contrary to common belief, the ones interested in the military probably don't look like your stereotypical gay.

They aren't being dishonest, they're just keeping it to themselves. If I was in the military, I would stay mum about my sexuality; there's no gain or loss in telling anyone for me, but that's me.

Sexuality can be changed. There are plenty of people that go through changes throughout their life.

You can not change your sexuality. You are assumed to be straight, and thus if you keep that you are not to yourself you are living a lie. People shouldn't have to do that to serve their country.
