I don't think fire was invented...it was just harnassed by stupid cavemen when they saw lightning strike a tree.

Honestly, in the grand scheme of things, a few million deaths are not a big deal to civilization as a whole, that is why I avoided putting penicillin in the top 5.

Don't think about religion's impact today, but rather in the medieval times, where religion gave people a reason to live, and brought much happiness to people globally. It is really what drove the medieval farmer to farm, it started the first real schools in education, and was at the forefront of scientific and scholastic discovery (before science began impeding on its roots).

I personally am agnostic, but I believe religion was definitely one of the top 5 inventions of all time (it it was infact an invention).
