Stem cell research Right or Wrong ?

I think it is a good thing for the fact that it helps save lives.

I do not consider it murder or the taking of a life if you kill something that is incapable of knowing that it has been killed, such as an aborted fetus. I can see everyones side on not wanting to harm another human being, but until the child is a toddler, I really don't think their body or their mind is capable of knowing the difference. Babies basically grow on trees. Anyone can have a baby and there's never going to be a shortage of them as long as humans are around. That being said, shouldn't we do everything in our power to make sure we as a race of people are able to survive for as long as possible, even if a few humans are basically sacrificed in the name of science? It is especially better if those being used in the research are too young to even know they were or are alive because nobody in their right mind would WANT to be killed for science

You're going to kill a baby to potentially save someone else? No.

What about the fetuses which have already been aborted? It's already gone, why not use the embryonic cells for the benefit of others?

EDIT: it's a large misconception that the only way to obtain sell stems is to 'kill a baby'.

If we start doing that. People will have abortions just to save people.

That's irrelevant; and, if you are considering a fetus, of any kind, a child, you're extremely mistaken.

I still don't understand the point above, please clarify.

How is an embryo a human life. I understand that if grown it could become a human but at the state it is in it is no more alive that a bacteria culture or a virus, it is just a group of cells.

Apparently YOU haven't the slightest idea what stem cell research entails. They do not "take a life away", they simply take already aborted fetuses and extract the desired cells.
And no, the government isn't concerned about scientists "playing god", they are worried about the backlash from religious fanatics (many of whom are current governors and statesmen) about the use of dead fetuses.

On topic: I'm completely pro stem cell research. My reasons are obvious.

Yes, in fact the government is worried that the research will go too far and humans will play god with this technology. Also they do take 'life away', stem cell research uses 'embryos', 'embryos' are any multicellular animal in a developmental stage preceding birth or hatching. That means these 'embryos' are in fact alive.

    @Vini
Why bring 'God', whose existence can't be verified, into this?

We also use aborted fetuses, you know. They will be disposed of ,so why not use the stem cells for the benfit of others?

Stem cell research may not be renoun for saving lives, but it's allowed people to walk again. I think it's right.

The only argument you people have AGAINST this is

" omg it kills babies "

No.. No it doesnt. You dont need to kill anything to do it. You can get stem cells from umbilical cords, already ( for other reasons ) aborted babies. If your argument is against abortion, or animal rights ( IE: We taking there stemcells to save HUMAN lives. Really? Human>Rat. How can you even argue) is a completely different topic.

Find something else besides " it kills babies " to defend your opinions.

We will not play god, nor should you bring something that so controversial into an already controversial topic.

If one of the great minds of todays society, example, Steven Hawkings, who could potentially changes the future drastically, was dying of internal issues such as lung failure, and you could make said lung from ALREADY aborted children, and umbilical cords, why wouldnt you? Whats the problem?

I beleive i heard somewhere, if they researched far enough into it, they wouldn't need to use babies. Instead they could take a sample from you, without it damaging anything permanently. You could then use this later in life when an issue arises and you need medical help.

Stem Cell research doesn't mean immortality though. to be immortal first, researchers would need to find out how to copy data from one's brain. As you get older, your brain deteriorates and if we were to repair it completely, we would lose all our memories. On the other hand, we could go without repairing the brain and still extend our lives maybe up to 100 years more, but then the whole civilization would be full of people loopy in the head.
