What is a Steam Account?

Im curious someone tell me

 

hmm howto put it, A client that allows you access to many games that you add/purchase through it. For example Counter-Strike:Source, MW2, Ghost Sniper etc.. People who play in leagues and need a low digit steam account "aka created a few years ago" purchase them so it looks like they've played for years.

With steam, you are able to purchase a vast majority of games online.
It's easy to use and allow you to chat with friends just like any other IM programs.
You can also add games that are not purchased from steam to allow playing it easier.
