Guys what's the most important language to learn?

Spanish for the win.

 

Seriously what benefit is Spanish? I wan't to learn something useful Chinese on the other hand is very very difficult to grasp.

That's true but it depends what he's going to do with his life and where's he's going to live. If I live in the U.S. my whole life I wouldn't need to know Mandarin Chinese.

@Astalavistababy: Arabic is a very hard language to learn, probably harder than Chinese from what I've heard.

 

Actually Mandarin Chinese is not as hard as Cantonese. Most Westerners will get the tone right on first try or pronunciation on first try. Cantonese on the other hand, you'll have trouble pronouncing words as there's really high and low tones. But I'll be impressed if a Westerner gets it right on first try.

Latin. It's one of the hardest languages to learn due to all the fucking exceptions but trust me when I say that it's universal. Most languages are branches of Latin which means they get some, if not a majority, of their words right out of the language. So if you know Latin, you know enough of so many other languages to get by.

 

What do you mean by "exceptions"? Is it like tones or pronounciations, maybe writing?

It's hard to say. Learning a whole new language is declining in importance. Thirty years ago, we didn't have the Internet with instant communication or translation so bilingual people had more importance. Nowadays it's not had to get a translation.

Don't get me wrong, obviously learning Arabic right now would help you significantly in the job market, but not as much as in the past or probably the in the future.

 

Yes, but how about if you're face to face with someone? You might need a translator if you go to a different country or place.

My mum can speak Latin I'm just not keen in learning a language like that. As of Chinese I don't want to spend years trying to learn a language.

I'm going to learn Arabic thank's for all the input and suggestions.

 

I've been deciding the same thing myself. For me it's between chinese and japanese.

If you're deciding between arabic and japanese, I'd go with Japanese.

The exceptions that I'm talking about are purely grammar and spelling exceptions. You're taught that all verbs follow the exact same rules for their endings. When you learn that, you can learn all the words that don't follow those rules at all and seem to do whatever they want. When I have more time, I'll find a chart to show you what I mean.

 

Mandarin Chinese doesn't take really long to learn, as in years, you might get good with it in a year, because I've seen some Gwai Lo learn in a few months.

I would think Mandarin Chinese would be first, because a lot more people speak it, and it will help more in business, work, and translation, et cetera.

But on a serious note, learn Chinese.

 

Arabic because most Chinese and Spanish people can speak English roughly. Arabic speakers mostly are horrible with English, not to mention you are more likely to get higher paid government jobs knowing Arabic.
