    Okay,
    so don't get me wrong.

I know the IP address is your computers gateway and blah blah.

I'm sick of all of these kids saying that they can break your computer with it.

I know you can ddos and find out where they live.

Could somebody explain to me all of the possible things you can do with someones IP?

You can lookup their approximate location on the map, see what ISP you run, etc.

I'll DDOS YOUR GRAPHICS CARD!!! SCURRED?

Lol, people just threaten because they want to feel intimidating. Google the definition of "E-thug"

I can explain it to you.
You can find the person's (actual) address, and therefore their name and phone number. No DoS or DDoS is required for this.

You can DDoS them if you are an extremely skilled programmer and have access to expensive software and 10+ computers, basically off-lining them for 24 hours. This would not be worth it, however, especially if the owner of the IP has a large service provider, because they take DDoSing very seriously.

If you have a direct connection into the ISP's, WWW's, or NSA/CIA's server, you can do many things through the IP, including disabling the computer or breaking the hard drive.

But if someone is threating you, they can't really do anything except a DDoS, which is risky.

If you want to reset your IP and live in peace, you can unplug your modem (not your wireless router) for 2 minutes and plug it back in again. if that fails, call your ISP.

    Hope this helped.

If you're behind a router, the only thing a person can do with your IP is find basic information such as the city (even that is a stretch) and the ISP you are using. They can perform DoS and DDoS attacks, but I doubt you'll ever be in such a situation where that becomes even a remote possibility.

If you are NOT behind a router (unlikely) they can do much more. They will be able to scan your computer and check for any vulnerable software, or even be able to connect to you if you have the right software running. A simple firewall should stop this.

    You are an idiot.

Your IP address is simply a label, and that's it. Your full address cannot be derived from an ip address on its own. Only a general location can be found, which are found from your ISPs datacenters closest to you.

DoS/DDoSing does not require any expensive or special software.

Nothing can be done to your computer from your IP address. They are not related to each other in any way. Your IP address has nothing to do with your harddrive, your computer, etc. It's like saying that since you have a name tag with your full name on it, that I can find your address from it, or even possibly give you a brain tumor, JUST because you had that name tag on. It's a ridiculous statement to make.

IP addresses cannot be reset unless you have a dynamic IP address! If you have a static IP address, NOTHING will change your IP address unless you talk to your ISP.

I don't think you understood my point. If you are in the ISP datacenter and have full access to everything AND you have someone's IP, you can find their full address and from there you can take the actions I mentioned above by sending an overflow of voltage to that address, causing a short circuit. It has been done. As for a DDoS attack, you do need multiple computers, and you need a software like Stacheldraht so that you can create a botnet, unless you happen to have hundreds of servers or computers sitting around.

cp is correct. Your IP address says absolutely nothing about you as an individual nor your computer. It is simply a few numbers that identify your computer among others on the internet. If you think of your computer as a "home" or "building" your IP address is like it's "location." I realize my explanation is awful and probably hard to understand but I'm trying to say that most kids online can do absolutely nothing with your IP, and those who can probably won't cause much damage at all.

You will never be in a datacenter. Doing anything silly at one will cost you your job and much more trouble. No one would do that.

You cannot send an "overflow of voltage," stop watching those hacker movies. It's simply not possible. Your ISP is not responsible for electricity to your house. An overflow of electricity does not cause a short-circuit, either.

You don't need expensive software for a botnet. There are tons of free software available, and it is not hard to write one yourself. All it takes is simple network programming. Do you think the people who own botnets use their own computers? NO, they don't. That's the whole point of having one.

Regarding your first paragraph, that is why I specifically said that no one could access that from the sythe community.

Secondly, a copper internet cable can have electricity sent through it, it isn't si-fi.

Thirdly, I was incorrect, I googled it and notice quite a few free options. However, running a good DDoS would take better software.

cp has thoroughly invalidated almost everything you've said so far, why dig yourself into a hole?

EDIT: We're trying to make sure the OP gets accurate and knowledgeable answers instead of speculation.

I read the whole page I'm still confused, can you or can you not get someone's address from an IP address if so, how so? And can I pay someone to find the address of someone I bought an account from, but forgot to ask real life info and I am very interested in getting it, but I know the IP.

You can get someones approximate location, and you can call their ISP and report all information you have about the IP if it were against the law, but other than that you can't do anything.

Also, being scammed on runescape isn't against the law. Just pointing that out before you waste your time.

Being scammed is against the law, it is fraud.

But the bottom line is, they can only get your general location and have the ability to report you to the IC3, as 1234567ASDF said, except for very rare/extreme situations which you will not encounter.

Thanks for all of your replies. It's basically what I thought.
    So to sum it up:
All someone will do really is get an approximate location.

They could do more if they knew what they were doing.

    Does that sound correct?

Yes, the chances of that are pretty rare. If you need help with a specific context, add my MSN: [email protected]

I love you cp. Also, I'm pretty sure you don't need to be a "skilled Programmer" to DDOS...I mean, kids in Runescape do it all the time 2 ppl like Sparc Mac lol, but more seriously...When you DDOS, you are trying to send an overwhelming amount of packets of information to one place (for example a Computer or Web-Site) right? So wouldn't a simple C.P. command be able to do this? (the more computers the more you could send?) I would prefer cp to answer this one =P.
