Photoshop CS2 or higher is fine for everything you need. I use CS4 because I'm lazy to upgrade to CS5, but most of the new features and such don't make a huge difference at a beginner level.

I started on GIMP, I find it the best to use when starting out.

Personally, I've never used GIMP, but I've heard it's very similar to Photoshop, only a little simpler. So yeah, it may be a good starting point before you get into Photoshop :)

I first started out on gimp and my gfx sucked. You'd be better of just starting with photoshop. We aren't allowed to discuss cracked stuff here, but if you add my msn I can help you.

If this is the first ever GFX you've done, GIMP is fine. There are thousands of tutorials to follow, it won't take long to make something semi-decent.
