For those who think Aliens are fake, think about this statement.

Our Earth is nothing compared to the whole universe... So why is it that we are the only living things? That can't be. We aren't that special. Also read my Obama oil spill thread.

Without knowing how life is formed (we only have an approximation) it is going to be hard to know how hard it is for life to appear from nothing so you can't even have an idea of the odds of life on the universe apart from us due to the size of the universe.

 

I like your thinking but what are the damn odds? We are so small its like a plankton on earth in a whol galaxy as we are to the universe. probably 100x that.

 

I'm not an expert, but I believe it's been scientifically proven.

OT: It all depends on the raw numbers of statistics on the chances of hospitable planets, etc..

In summation: Drake's equation takes into consideration the average star formation in our galaxy, the number of planets around said star, the average number of planets that could support life (from our knowledge), the likelihood of said planets to harbor intelligent life, etc.
My only criticism of many Scientist's theory is that we only limit potential life to how we we survie; i.e. certain amount of gases to breathe, water to live, etc.
All in all, I do believe in extraterrestrial life because I refuse to believe that we can be the only species living in our vast, ever-growing universe.

The "Aliens are fake" part of the title is misleading...you are saying in the OP that by probability aliens probably exist, but the word "fake" makes it seem like you are talking about alien sightings on earth. If someone disagrees with the probability of aliens existing you wouldn't use the word "fake".

If you get my point, i think those alien stories on earth are most likely fake, while aliens existing at all anywhere is most likely true.

 

It's almost certain that there is some kind of life elsewhere in the universe, the conditions that allow it aren't that rare.

However, claiming that aliens have somehow (inexplicably) come across the universe only to abduct impressionable midwestern farmboys is absurd.

 

Angel, where on earth did you get farmboys from? I said crops circles are real but not abducting farm boys lol? I think they are on life and we just haven't discovered them yet.

 

Alright then, what possible reason could these aliens (who must be able to travel close to the speed of light) have for coming across the universe to make crop circles? If they're so keen to reveal themselves to us they could, you know, reveal themselves to us...

 

I'm a firm believer that other life exists in this universe, it is ignorant to think we're the only ones here.

Angelmax - regarding your statement, I believe it's as difficult for them to find us as it is for us to find them. Neither of us have successfully done it yet, and I don't think we will for centuries. I do think that of all the different forms of life that could exist, we are the most intelligent and advanced.

 

Precisely, the sheer size of the universe as well as the relatively simple components needed for life as we know it suggest that there should be some kind of life elsewhere.

Probably not for centuries, more thousands of years at minimum. I don't have the figures at hand, but the time radio communications to the nearest star (which probably doesn't have planets, let alone life) would take is simply out of the question.

Why? How could we possibly say that when we know absolutely nothing of the form it would take?

 

I believe that their are other life forms out there besides our own. Probably not in our solar system unless they are able to survive on materials we cannot.

 

I base it on the assumption that a far more intelligent life form would have found us by now.

It's more of a theory over anything else. If there were extremely intelligent forms of life outside of our planet, isn't it safe to say their technology would be ever-growing at a rapid rate? It is impossible to predict how long they have been in the universe, but that brings up an interesting question I'd like to ask.

We both agree that there are different forms of life out there, do you believe they are trying to find us? I've read many theories, some have predicted that if there are different forms of life that we do not want to come in contact with them, mainly because it is probable they are overly aggressive. It has no real backing to it, it's just a statement, but I'm always interested to hear what people think.

I'd like to know what you think.

 

I think you're underestimating how difficult it would be for any kind of message to reach us or another civilisation. Life could exist pretty much anywhere in the universe, up to billions of light years away. We've only been searching for anything for half a century at most.

Even if some kind of contact was made, it would most likely be impossible for the parties to ever come into contact. Take the example of us, here on earth. We struggle to reach our own moon, we could never hope to reach even the closest star (atleast with technology conceivable today).


Everything is purely speculative, anyway.
