Since this old desktop I'm running on is used for really nothing but surfing the internet and listening to music, and it only has 1 gb of RAM and Windows Vista (Which should be illegal) I plan on maybe installing Ubuntu onto my computer, because I'm seriously sick of Vista and I don't want Windows 7, either, and I also don't want to spend cash upgrading my RAM. Is it worth it? I've never used any Linux/GNU so I'm not sure if I should or not.
You can get ram DIRT cheap like $20 for one.. And if you don't know linux, don't do it. It CAN be for the typical user in GUI form but unless you have a desire and interest in technology and computers, don't do it.
I have an interest in computers and technology, I'm really just want to experiment, get some experience, you know?
Then yes. I'd honestly recommend Ubuntu or debian. Probably ubuntu as it's more geared towards gaming.. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. I'm no expert but i've fiddled with it a lot and had a few servers running on debian before.
I say dive into the deep end. Go with Slackware so that you learn to not rely on Package Managers, and learn how to actually install a system. Learning a language is best done when fully immersed; the same applies to Operating Systems.
