Why Do People Smoke?

Why do people smoke? When they know its one of the worlds major causes of death. Yes most are addicted but why do they continue. Smoking is a slow suicide, why carry on?

 

i think people get addicted to the nicotine and cant stop lol

 

Yes, but there are people that try to break out of the habbit, then they get back onto it, why is that?

 

Because their body is telling them it wants nicotine.
I have never smoked in my life and do not plan on it

Have you honestly never heard of nicotine?

Are you a drinker? if so, if I told you to give up drinking right now and never again consume alcohol for the rest of your life, would you do it? Just like you may think you only drink to socialize. Why do you think we have all these drug addicts in the world, for example meth. I know it's alot more addictive than nicotine, but its the same concept. Just don't start smoking and end of story, me personally have tried it on several occasions, I guess im just not one of those people who like inhaling dirty smoke into my lungs.

 

I smoke because it makes me look cool you know...

 

Although when a person first smokes a cigarette it tastes horrible (after all, it is still a poison), once a few cigarettes are consumed the reactions changes from vomiting to addiction. The nicotine inside cigarettes is often the cause, though the general 'look' or feel of a cigarette also helps. Some people even love the simple act of rolling a cigarette.

It's a terrible habit that would be great to stop, however it's extremely hard to quit a nicotine addiction as your brain starts to crave the nicotine hit. However, as it's become a big issue there's plenty of people around to help one quit.

Maturity for the win.

 

But how can the nicotine urge be lessoned? Im not a smoker never will be but friends are and I would like to get more insight.

 

With nicotine patches, gum, etc.

Every person is different, some can give up just like that, some can't.

It's not just about the drug, it's how the body reacts to it.

 

Back when I used to smoke, I just did it to try and relax myself. I have no idea why or how it made me feel relaxed, but it worked. I'm considering starting again since I'm going through a very stressful time in my life. Some people do it just to look cool, yes. Others do it out of addiction. I guess I'm one of the very few people that does it for another reason.

 

Verts, I reccommened not starting, its really bad for your lungs, if you want to relax there are many ways to do so, play games, go out, walk, exercise etc. Trust me dont start up smoking.

The amount of times i've heard someone saying there stressed and need a ciggy ....

It's a stimulant (am I correct) and that is why it relieves stress?

 

Makroe, there are other forms of stimulants, smoking is one of the worst.

 

well , knowing my dad his a heavy smoker *1 - 2 packs a day* i reckon he only smokes cause his addicted from the stress at work

 

Nicotine patches supply the bloodstream with small amounts of nicotine. This helps to reduce cravings and as amounts are reduced, a person gradually sops feeling the need to smoke.

Also, chewing tobacco might help get you away from smoking it, but I don't know much about this topic.

Although many people claim it's a relaxant, it's actually a stimulant which gives energy, similar to coffee (maybe a bad example). I don't smoke, as you may have guessed, but some people obviously react differently to the cigarette. Maybe the sense of routine and familiarity of rolling/smoking a cigarette was relaxing to you?

 

Would be surprised how "heavy" some smokers really are.

Here in New Zealand, tax is getting higher and higher on tobacco. That's one way to stop people, though it is still legal to grow your own and if it does become illegal, it will just be like marijuana, will have to buy it illegally.

 

I smoke because its the only thing that controls my ADHD without turning me into a zombie. Yes, smoking may be bad for you, but its nowhere near as bad as a drug that is known to cause people to commit suicide.
