Bret Easton Ellis

Author of Rules Of Attraction, Less Than Zero, and the Controversial American Psycho.

His novels are nihilistic, dark, and almost always satirical. I love black comedy, and if you do too- read a Bret Easton Ellis novel.

 

American Psycho was an amazing read, I couldn't put it down. I actually felt physically sick at some parts, such as the urinal mint cake scene lol. I haven't had a chance to read any other books by Ellis, but I'll definitely pick one up soon .

What book is your favourite of his?

 

American Psycho by far. There is a film adaptation starring Christian Bale, the concept is there but in no way does it do the novel justice.

Next i would read 'Rules Of Attraction' based upon a bunch of spoiled college kids. If you enjoyed the graphic violence for what is was worth in American Psycho then try his novel 'glamorama' with a very similiar concept- but instead of a wall street yuppie protagonist its a new york model/night club manager with terrorist connections. Both are superb, both are very dark comedies.

 

I've seen the film countless times, it's got a high place in my collection . Thanks for the recommendation, it sounds like a great read! I'm really looking forward to reading it. I'll pick it up in a couple of days, probably .

I love the dark comedic side to American Psycho, it just captures a style that the film didn't. The last sentence "This is not an exit," made me chuckle, I lent the book to my friend and he didn't mention it so I guess he didn't understand it.

 

The film is definitely toned down immensely. There are 20+ page chapters graphically centered around his one night torture indulgences. The violence is so detailed, so relentless- i love it, and not for the wrong reasons.

Last sentence is perfect, the novel is a tragedy, its satirical yes but it is a tragedy also. I think most can relate to feeling claustrophobic within their own lifestyle.

 

He's pretentious, his shit is just pseudo-intellectual pulp fiction.

Somebody actually compared him to Salinger. Bullshit.

But yeah, I enjoy it.
