What is Sniping?

Sniping is when you attempt to be the first person to put an order in right after the GE, doing this makes you first in line for the item and greatly increases your chances of buying that item.​

Why would you Snipe?

Sniping is a very very good way to make money. Sniping allows you to buy
"unbuyable" or rising items on the Grand Exchange.

There are items on Runescape that go for more than their Grand Exchange Value. For example, Party Hats*, Pumpkins*, etc etc. These are unbuyable through the Grand Exchange, unless you Snipe. After buying these items from the Grand Exchange, you can sell them for a lot more at "street" value.

List of unbuyable items on the Grand Exchange:

All party hats
Pumpkins
Halloween Masks
Easter Eggs
Christmas Cracker
Disks of Returning
Half Wine
Elysian Spirit shield
Divine Spirit shield


How to Snipe?

Firstly, you're going to need to buy a crashing item that has been recently dumped, or for whatever reason is falling. Check out items Merch Clans just dumped.

Secondly, you're going to put in an offer to sell that item at Maximum price. When the Grand Exchange updates, the tab that the item is in will have an Hourglass in it.



Finally, when that image appears it means the Grand Exchange has updated. You now put an offer in for the item and you're 2-3 minutes ahead of anybody else using IRC bots, or websites that text them. Those 2-3 minutes make a hell of a difference.

Thank you very much for sharing this! A few questions though, I noticed that g/e updated one time at 12:30pm pacific - 12:40pm pacific time. Does it mean the next day it will be around that time? say 11am - 1:30pm? Also like the above poster asked, you put the offer in right when you see the hourglass? Do you need to refresh or anything?

It's worth camping an hour or two for 50$ IRL, so yes it can be boring, but the rewards > time.

No, the GE update time is random, but it usually happens 16-28 hours after the previous one. I've seen it as early as 8 hours.

No, you don't have to refresh the GE page.

mmm yeah nice Would be funny if the item just sold rofl! Could also put in offer for minimum for an item that is rising Only if you don't have crashing items.

 

-> The "unbuyable" part is more true than you think.
Of that list, I only really think that eggs, masks (excluding red), and santas are snipeable on a semi-regular basis.

The rest are simply un-buyable, unless someone's acc is hacked and the hacker wants to get rid of items quick... it would be more efficient to buy merch clan items or sell junk this way than to buy rares.
Also, sniping has become quite popular, and there is quite a bit of competition, even outside of IRC bots.

 

Wrong if you ask Anthony he have sniped a Ester egg and i doubt even someone that hax a players account sells in GE if i did i would not change PW but post in item section and wait till i got buyer then change PW and sell to him xD but nice giode and all items is snipebel whit extrem luck and mabey better method (anthony )

 

This guide is wrong. Whenever the G.E updates, it doesnt update all the items at once; but instead it just updates items that isnt selling/sold out.

The hourglass just indicates that 'That' specific item has been updated.

Then, a solution would be buying a merch item at max then =.=?

Sorry but that is false
some unbuyable items did not update, as none were sold via GE

 

sniping is really tough to do though if you have to keep looking at the screen.
