What is THE book for soft tech ?

You know what I'm talking about. Where do they explain, in subsequent and logical rhythm, the likes of it all: from the seeds of soft tech, to hypertext transfer protocol, nodes, request-response protocol, upstream servers, to what happened at CERN in those early days, to scripts and user interface progression, to full on web languages and your latest frameworks & other recent innovations, and everything in between?

Surely, before the internet took over as the medium by which to acquire all the necessary knowledge, old schoolers were reading books on the stuff. What is THAT book ?
