    Absolute Pitched: Inherited talent?

    Hi everyone,

I started playing the piano when I was 5 years old. I'm 14 years old and I still play now. I've come to enjoy and love music, but just recently I discovered I had absolute pitch.

At first I didn't really know it was special or anything. Someone would play a note on the piano and I could tell what that note was, I could sing a note without having to listen to it first from an external source and I could listen to a tune and tell what key it is in. I could also tune a guitar without having to use a tuner or listen to the note first. Recently my piano teacher found out that I had absolute pitch, and said that it's a very rare talent, with only 1% of americans having it.

I'm NOT boasting about anything.. please don't get the impression that I am...

    But here's my question.
My teacher says absolute pitch is an inherited talent.
The funny thing is, my parents are dead shit at music. They don't possess any musical background, and it would take them 10 years to learn how to play 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' on the piano. I studied some of my past generations, none of them seem to have absolute pitch.

    What do you guys think?

Absolute Pitch can be inherited AND learnt. I have absolute pitch after years of working with music, before I started with music I didn't.

    How did you learn it?
Everyone says that you gotta inherit it because it's implanted in ur brain from birth, the ability to memorise a note

I don't think there's a way to learn it. You just pick it up when you work with notes/music on a daily basis.

maybe its the fact you've been playing piano for 9 years, and when younger the notes have implanted in your mind, since this is the time you start to generally learn things new.
