    Day of Silence

I did this last year. Unfortunately, it convinced more than enough people that, since I'm supporting the Day of Silence, I myself must be gay.

Although there's nothing wrong with being gay, it makes it that much harder to get a date to prom, so I'm not going to risk it this year;]

What does this "protest" do? Sure, it promotes awareness of the harassment gays get, but is it really necessary? Does it really need to be held every single year? It just raises hostility between gay and straight students.

Annual protests are just a minor effort that everyone can participate in, much like The March of the Invisible Children (>>here<<) that they do around the country annually.. the goal is to, and imagine this, have the ideal become so widespread that eventually one day, everyone will stop talking to support the protest. Imagine the impact that would have..
Also, it's just something people do to feel like they're doing what they can to help... for one reason or another... (not always the chivalrous reasons)

You do know that an entire month is already dedicated to gay pride, right? I guess other minorities should deserve a day as well going by your logic.

I am just doing it to show my support to end violence against those who are different. I think we are all the same, and shouldn't be treated differently just because we like something different. It is a bit useless, but until someone shows me another way to give my support ill do this.

I don't mind supporting them but not by being silent, silence does nothing to aid this cause.

All men ... are NOT created equal! Some are born swifter afoot, some with greater beauty, some are born into poverty and others born sick and feeble. Both in birth and upbringing, in sheer scope of ability every human is inherently different; Yes that is why people discriminate against one another, which is why there is struggle, competition and the unfaltering march of progress. Inequality is not wrong, equality is.

However, unity for a cause allows for great power. I won't participate, merely cause I see no reason for it, but that doesn't mean I don't participate in other protests :p.

Is duct tape really all it takes Frosty? If so,

Also, the day of silence is about getting to people to think about what it would be like to be gay, and to not be able to speak openly because of one's sexuality. I did it in high school, but only because I had a friend who was doing it as well (her parents are gay). I will probably do it again this year.

No, I won't be participating. A group of people do this at my school every year (they aren't gay, mind you, actually a bunch of attention whores). 90% of the students don't know what the hell they have tape over their mouths for, and when they hand out the papers explaining why the majority of people laugh.

That being said, I see no point in being silent - it proves what, that you're supportive? Sure, but at the end of the day nobody cares, everyone carries on with their lives and tomorrow it is forgotten. It sounds harsh and pretentious but that's the sad truth.
