Fail is both non human and inanimate. Although not physical, I have seen frequent use of the term associated with non physical entities in literature. One example would be in religious writing, in which jesus is cited as the personification of love. Although the use here may not be the most correct use of the word, the term is slightly ambiguous and the connotations used in my example are easily understood : D
