He didn't sell it for $3 per GP

You have to realize that even thought its over 9k , that its not 100% profit, he mentioned he bought it cheaper, either way hes making money, and when he moves into the real world this would look nice on a resume, but seeing how he has kept this up for so long, he probably has the experience to start his own business out of online games.
