RULES: Unless you are a current Sythe Mod or a member with 500+ posts, your post will be considered SPAM and Reported.

In light of us finally seeing who Harped really was, I ask this question of Sythe Mods and even Sythe if he finds his way to this post.

I posted that I believed based upon Harped’s Sythe habits I felt he was after Moderator status. Harped verified this assumption in his Goodbye post that followed a day or so later. My question to Sythe is what measures are in place to protect member accounts at the Moderator level? I honestly feel that if Harped had he not fallen, in time he perhaps could’ve gained Moderator status. If a Moderator goes bad.. Are you able to track his/her actions to identify the security breach? Considering the impact, does Sythe verify personal information on Moderators so that they can be legally responsible for their actions? I'll use my account as an example. I feel access to my account or any other serious seller/buyer could quickly allow a scam well above $2K.

Lastly for Sythe, as a current Moderator, what powers do you have that could be used for scamming concerning account security? Thanks for taking the time to post and also I understand this may go behind closed doors to perhaps review current security procedures.

    Thanks.

Tweaked rules due to request from members that felt that had something to add..

Not gonna lie, i was wondering the same thing. If harped could have so easily gained access to not only Megamatts account but hacked SuF, how easy would it be for him to get accounts such as fatih and spyike? I know my fair share about hacking, peoples petty keyloggers with clean scans from novirusthanks is nothing. People can get into just about anything. I remember a thread awhile back about sythes very old version of VBulletin. How much security is actually taken to protect a members identity and privacy?

EDIT: Re-reading your post i think i thought you were saying something else, so sorry if this is off-topic.

TBH, I don't care what your rules are.

    1. All moderator actions are logged.
    2. Only morons will place more trust in a staff member than any other member. Its their own fault if they get scammed.
    3. Sectionals can do basically nothing that can help them scam.
    4. TBH, its really not that hard to become a moderator.

My only account to ever get hacked was my Gmail email, which I have no idea how he did.

    Modlogs.

Globals and admins can perm. delete.

Sigex hacked Fatih's account a while back, and this version of vBulletin is fine (old doesn't mean insecure... just old).

All mod actions are logged, and can be viewed by administrators. Mods are not able to permanently remove anything, and anything done can be easily reversed. Since July 2009, a new security system has been implemented for staff accounts. Unless you are the authorized owner of the account, you won't be able to access the account even if you know the account password.

We don't require personal information from staff members because we respect privacy. You will have to make the decision yourself whether or not you want to trust a staff member.

Look at that SuF, you and I have something in common as TBH I don't really care what your opinion of the rules I established for the thread are. Also, I would think you of all people would also be concerned seeing how your account has not been so secure. Try getting off the other side of the bed tomorrow morning. Thanks for your input BTW.

My public gmail got hacked, which had a 100% random long password got hacked, not my Sythe account.

Sythe's moderators accounts are secure. You shouldn't trust mods any more than non mods. End of story. I don't know what you are suggesting here. Nothing really.

Seriously? People assume that one becomes a mod through hard work and a trustworthy rep. Naturally a mod should be deemed as more trustworthy than your standard run of the mill Sythe member.

Regarding the OP, it seems as though they do a decent job of monitoring and enforcing rules with mods. I would look at Inventor/Daily as recent proof. I think there are petty favoritisms with some of the mods/admins, but at the end of the day, I believe they can fairly put aside their own beliefs in favor of justice.

My view is that maybe some mods who don't use the Market as much should have a title claiming they're banned from its use.
this way if for example a global moderator was hacked and he does not visit the Market, can receive this title and no one can hack and use his global status as a bonus into scamming items.

But I guess referring to PENs' post, they have tweaked the security for moderator accounts and it should not happen if not at a EXTREMELY low rate in the future of this community.

To be honest SuF, that is the stupidest thing I have heard in a while. If we can't trust our moderators more than the rest of the members, then who can we trust? You're basically saying we shouldn't trust OMMs more than normal members.

Jesus fucking christ why the hell are they OMMs then? Isn't the OMM rank and/or staff rank considered trustworthy? You wouldn't promote a scammer to either rank would you? If we can't trust our staff members, then who can we trust?

Nobody. I know there may be a few staff members who have scammed before, and was banned, but they are supposed to hold the rank because they are trustworthy.

    If that made any sense.

On topic: I'm sure there are mod logs to clear that up. I think we should have another form of security though, to make sure it's really us on our accounts.

    Hmm...

Mod logs are built into nearly all Forum software and their are multiple safty precautions which can and are probably in place on sythe, i wouldn't worry about it to much as it will just cause more trouble constantly having it on your mind.

When I was promoted, I had never done a single trade in my life and within about a month someone asked me to MM a $1200 trade. Why would I be any more trustworthy than anyone else? Its not like staff need to prove their trustworthiness. OMM's do. They go through a tough process that makes it so we can pretty much trust them, but staff do not go through that process, so sadly, you really can not trust them. The longer they are staff, without doing anything bad, then fine you can trust them more but when they are first promoted, or for the first long while there in you can not.
