Philosophy is just silly. People spend too much time on what if and not enough time on what is.

I agree, Kind of like What if the world wasn't in debt. Instead of thinking that they need to be thinking how to get out of debt.

Thing is, "What if" usually becomes "What is", so it's better to be right on the what if

Guesses aren't always correct. For people who are in love with their brains, belief in a guess sounds silly, don't ya think?

What is religion if not belief in a guess?

I would answer that, but I don't want to turn this into a religious thread.

I really enjoy studying philosophy, I don't find it silly in the slightest. Prove your statement on "People spend too much time on what if..." with a few examples... I disagree..

If people didn't believe that guessing was more powerful than going blindly into the future then all the meteorologists, stockbrokers, financial consultants, pretty much experts of any kind would go out of business. Some people are experienced enough that their guess about the future is better than the average person's.

When someone guesses the weather, they do it based on something that helps them do that; it isn't a random guess.

    Philosophy isn't random guesses either.

It's ideas that seem abstract to the average.

Philosophy, like the other professional guesses I listed, is an educated prediction. But Philosophy is such a broad term that you can't really discard it or agree with it completely.

If someone makes a guess based on something valid, it isn't called philosophy anymore. If someone guesses weather you call it weather forecasting, not philosophy. I'm talking about the general meaning and understanding of philosophy.

I agree with blindkilla. Philosophy at its best is the most sophisticated and abstract form of thought, and besides it's other consistencies, it is the basis for morality and ethics.
Surprisingly, philosophy - or rather, metaphysics - are responsible for much of modern science.

If we didnt have philosophy then we would not have the ideals on society and government that we do today. The basis of every major nation is set on things that earlier philosophers such as Voltiare stated. philosophy enables a free-form of thinking and though that is good for the induvidual to help them understand the way things work, for a higher person such as a leader of a country, this can cause a major problem because people believe that they have the perfect idea or want something such as freedoms. Revolutions such as the French Revolution and American Revolution were based on enlightenment ideas like these(too lazy to explain the enlightemnent). In China Confucianism has influence everything from the arts to the government mainly through the use of the civil service exams...

Yes the term "Philosophy" could be debated as to whether it is good or bad but in the end, its effects can be seen plainly and if you disagree take a look at the Declaration of Independence. Philosophy is good for a induvidual that is trying to understand life and the way things work, you begin to break away from the norm such as the kid in the book "The Giver". Overall if you are trying keep peace then philosophy is bad because every person differs on the way a society should be run and when these thoughts collide there are problems. Hah and thanks for this our whole AP World History Class had a biiig discussion =)
