I don't understand, Administrators can ban IP addresses, but not search them or even check them? How is that logical? And, why cannot global Moderators check IP's? Maybe that is the reason we have so many ban evaders, no one can check for ban evading accounts.

If Admins cannot check a IP address, the head of the board, I see a problem.

A Moderator privilege is a sign of trust within the staff, certainly if you receive Global Moderator. Allow at least Global Mods to Check IP addresses.

I am assume that most staff here trust an Admin? Why not allow them to check an IP?

Back when I was a mod they disabled it - with valid reason; IP searches lead to down time because the DB is so large.

Anyway, Admins can search IPs in the Admin CP.

 

No, they cannot. I've been told a few times they can't by Sin.

Also, almost 100% of the time doing an IP search would lead to an hour of site downtime. It's a huge strain on the DB.

 

All mods can check IP's, but we can't search the entire data base for IP matches.

You're partially right - moderators cannot reverse search, and see which users have used a given IP. However, they can lookup all the IP's used by a given account. The problem, as Darth pointed out, was that IP searches kept crashing the site: there are tens of thousands of users, some users with hundreds of IP's. By the time it was disabled, I could only search between 2-4 am; any other time would knock the site out for about 15 minutes.

Obviously, the staff would like to get searches back online, and Sythe is both aware of the problem and the need for a solution.

So, you cannot go into the Modcp, and then click on "Search IP address", type the username and find a result? Seriously?

 

We can search by username, but, as Sin said, we cannot search by IP. Sin also explained the reason for that.

 

That's no good, It will give you the IP, not the registered users.

 

If the IP comparison function is to be brought back, first a solution will be needed to keep the server from overloading. Got a solution? Tell it to Sythe, until then stop complaining.

 

That function is disabled. The IP search, that is. It literally crashes the site 95% of the time and you usually don't get results.

 

SOLUTION!!!

Prune all inactive ip addresses, or get a better server.

Ip banning and ip searching are on different categories.
