Is everything really clear (see-through) without light?

It has been proven that an object's color as perceived by the (human) eye is simply the light that the object reflects.

i.e. A plant is green because it absorbs red, orange, yellow, blue, indigo and violet light and reflects green light.

With all of the above being stated, I ask every KNOWLEDGABLE person on Sythe.org:

In the presence of total darkness (i.e. a cave), would an object be clear/black/white/etc.?

There is no light to produce the color reflections for your eye to see. I find this impossible to prove without the main dependent variable being present even when unwanted; light.

 

Well, in the partial absense of light, the object appears to be dark, therefore, I would have to conclude that the object would appear to the human as darkness (black).

It cannot be white, as an object is white when it reflects all the colors of light. It cannot be clear because that would mean that other particles of light are somehow going through the object, and if there are other particles of light then the object is not in darkness.

*On topic: I guess it would appear black after all. But how would we be certain as we'd need to be in total darkness to test the theory. Then how would we see it to test?

 

Because of the material, it would still retain its ability to reflect certain light.

Colour is given by light, and black is the lack of light, or the absorption.

When light is present, the plant may appear to be green, but when that light is removed there is no way to prove its colour, so it would assuredly be black.

Wait, so the universe, from space, appears black. And there can not exist "nothing". Although I may be proved wrong, would that mean that dark matter absorbs light?

You did say the same thing I did when you mentioned there being no way to prove a true color in the absence of light. But you then said that you were certain it would be black. How are you certain if theres no way to prove it in the first place (like you and I said...)?

It kind of makes sense, as colour does have a lot of link to light. It wouldn't really surprise me if it was true. I suppose in theory, you are right, but it's just incredibly hard (if not impossible) to prove.
