Battling in Pokemon Gen I and II

Battling in pokemon is an art. It combines strategy, dedication, trust and patience. The strategy is knowing what pokemon to use. Dedication is training these pokemon. Trust is believing that your pokemon will win. Patience is not rushing a battle, or making a rash decision.

I started battling in 2002. Since then I have worked my way through Pokemon games, mastering them as best I could. I have been getting a lot of questions about how to battle lately. So in response here is my guide.

A proper team of pokemon is essential to battling. Each pokemon has a weakness. One of your pokemon should cover anthers weakness, so that you can defend against any attack. For example, If you have an Arcanine, you should also have an electric type pokemon like Jolteon to cover the water weakness.

Battling is more than that. There are many water pokemon in Generation one. Why use a lapras over a Goldeen? The answer is stats. It is a common misconception that levels show the strength of a pokemon. The stats of a pokemon make it powerful or weak. Individual pokemon in a species will have slightly different stats. Still certain species are better than others. The best way to check the possible strength of a pokemon is online.

    Bulbapedia

For other help there is also Serebii
Knowing the stats of Pokemon will drastically impact your battling and training. For example abandon your pikachu, in exchange for the statically stronger Jolteon.

    Now there is this
The stats and what they do..

    Code:
Attack Raises damage for normal attack moves
Special Attack	Raises damage for special attack moves
Defense Lowers incoming damage for normal attack moves
Special Defense	Lowers incoming damage for special attack moves
Hitpoints (HP)	The max amount of damage that can be taken
Speed The pokemon with faster speed goes first

    A few more sections

Just a few tricks for battling

    The first is Solarbeam
For many people when Sunny day is used, its bad. Water attacks don’t do as much damage, while fire attacks are boosted. Of course the opponent will have a fire type pokemon out, or have a pokemon who knows fire type moves. There are upsides to Sunny day though. It means that solar beam doesn’t require a charge. This can turn a devastating situation into a workable situation. Sunny day also decreases the accuracy of Thunder.

    The second is Lightning attacks.
This is my favorite. Any time rain dance is activated, lightening type attacks will never miss! So this means that a good pokemon team would be
Water with the move ‘Rain Dance’ and any ability boosted by Rain.
Lightning with ‘Thunder’. This way a normally inaccurate move is made 100 percent accurate

    STAB

As great as it is to have a garchomp know flamethrower (bye bye ice pokemon) there is a reason why it may not be as effective as you think. The reason why is Same type attack bonus, or STAB. If the type of the move is the same type as one of the pokemons types, then the move gets a 1.5x bonus. This is why multi type pokemon are useful.

    EVs
I was asked to do a section on these. EVs are hidden numbers that determine stats. It takes 4 EVs for one more stat change. All of the medicines like Zinc and Carbos all give 10 EVs to a specific stat. The Max amount of EVs per stat is 255. This means that the most you can permanently boost a stat by attainting EVs is 63
The max amount of EVs you can have overall is 510. The max amount of Vitamins you can have is 10 per vitamin, and 51 overall. Using EVs will boost the effectiveness and power of your pokemon

I used to collect Pokemon when I was young. I like the 1st and 2nd gen Pokemon, and then I grew out of it. My sister a few years ago used to collect the cards and I saw there are soooo many more. I don't like any of the new gens. How many are there now?

Do you know what IV's are? They just impact Hidden Power.

What you said about selling pokemon illustrates why I dislike gen 4 . I will try to do a segment or two on later gens. I just am not as knowledgable also I prefer bulbapedia to serebii because of the better format.

Also thanks for the valuable input, I will be sure to
    put it to good use!
