I'm mad at myself. It's so terrible :p. I'm serious, I mean look at it! I followed a tutorial, and it still looks like crap! Urghh...
    (insert terrible picture here)

Actually, previewing the post, it doesn't actually look as.... GOOD as I thought it would? It looks like crap! Urghh, I hate Photoshop.

    First attempt? Amazing.
This looks really cool, but is it suppose to be anything in perticular?
Maybe change the back ground to a gradient and add a shawdow?
It really does look nice, good job :) .

That looks really nice, maybe a bit too big for a sig.
Could you explain what you did?
I hope you didn't just take a background and paint a brush over it :/
    Anyways, that looks pretty nice.

    Unfortunately... yeah...

Well, I added a Gaussian blur effect and used a gradient layer mask to make it only effect over the horizon. Yes, I used brushes to make the design, but I added a glow effect on it, for the red tinge and I lowered the brightness on the original picture. Take a look:

Yeah, I did feel sort of guilty that I didn't make those effects by using a brush and adding effects to the brush layer, but I have no idea how to make that stuff :/ I'm still a beginner, so I'm proud of it, anyways.

Well it's not all that bad. At least you did something. Some people take a cool anime stock (or anything), put text over it, and say they made it. -.-
Anyways, you don't have to make your own brushes or anything. Try putting some c4ds. Search on google or Deviantart.com for some c4ds, and put them on lighten, liner dodge, color dodge, soft light (just experiment with blending options).
A little tip: Try downloading a splatter brush from deviantart.com (or search on google). Then make a new layer, brush over it. Hide that layer. Make a new layer, go to IMAGE -> APPLY IMAGE, and click ok (don't mess with any of the settings). Then unhide your previous layer. Then right-click on the applied image layer, and click "Use previous layer to make clipping-mask". Then try moving around that applied image layer, flipping it verticle, or something.
This process is known as a clipping mask. If you didn't get what I said, try searching it on google (or you can pm or add my msn and I can try to help you).
Your actually much better then you think. I hope to see more art from you :).
I hope this post helped you :).

    Ugh your back =|
Well thats a nice way to treat a new artist..

People post something and say that it sucks just to have other people tell them otherwise to make them feel better about themselves. It's called fishing for compliments.

Yeah but come on, its his first gfx. How would you like it if you made your first gfx and were feeling all proud about when somebody just said "It sucks".
You might feel that you sucks at gfx and quit (oh and super auto, I'm not saying you suck, your awesome at gfx). Really.
Yeah I know he was probably doing that on purpose, but still.

Honestly, it's not bad for a first. You need to learn the program more. You have blurring, layers, and the basic tools down it seems. Try incorporating c4d effects, brushes, and renders or stocks. A stock is usually easier to work with. You will get the hang of it eventually. Just look at some tutorials. I can always give you constructive criticism when you need it.

I really don't like the first pic in the thread, but I love my signature, even if I did use a tutorial for it. I love the high-res brushes I downloaded and the brushes I used for the light. I would have done more effects to the light if I still had the .psd, but I don't. I'll mess around with some things on the light + black background. Btw, draucia, what's a clipping mask supposed to do + what version of Photoshop do you have?

It's kinda hard to explain, but I'll try. Example (I think I've told someone else this before):

Say your making a flyer for a trip to Cuba. You write text, for example: "Cuba".
But you also want this photo of water: [CLICK HERE]
IN the text. You could cut out the shape of the text from the picture, OR you could use a clipping mask and it would directly place the picture parts so it fits on the text. Ugh I'm bad at explaining. Try searching on google if you didn't get what I said.

EDIT: Oh and I have CS3, I feel it is easier to use.

    Clipping mask? : [IMG]

I have CS4, I found it hard because there was no "Create clipping mask from previous layer" button on mine, that explains it much better, too. Thanks.
