I think it would benefit us in so many ways IF we had one set of federal laws rather than each state having its own separate laws.

I don't live there, but I highly agree. It would do my head in changing laws every state, and some of them aren't just a little different but quite alot if im correct?

You've apparently never seen a map.

That's what you call "The Americas." They're called "The Americas" because there are two. It would be greedy, and oddly American-like if we were to name ourselves 'America'.

Oh, my... Modern geography in the education system needs to attempt the impossible and to teach.

If you study the founding of the country you will notice that many of the early leaders wanted the states to have much more power than the federal government. Due to that alone, if you want to take away all their power now you would have a very tough time getting it done (Unless one of the two major parties decided they wanted that and then it could be done in like a day... >_<).

But anyways. Each state is different. The state speed limit in Montana lets say is like 75... New York's is 55... Setting a federal standard would not work as the states vary so much. There is also so many aspects of law that the states cover and giving them all to the federal government would be an overload...

Every state has it's own rules and set regulations that differ from every state. Like for example, some states support gay marriage and others ban it. There shouldn't one set clear government ruling over the entire country. That's just not how we came to be.

Federalism has some benefits - with the states having more power it keeps the federal government's power in check, at least in theory.

Ideally states should also be able to secede.

They shouldn't be able to secede. They signed the constitution and should not be allowed to break free unless they are allowed to by the rest of the states. If they were able to secede then it would be much easier for another break up and civil war to occur.

I don't think hes talking about the name. Read the post next time instead of trollin?

I think I agree. But state government make it so you don't have to go to like federal court just for stealing a balloon you know? Just a little example. Breaks things up.

The states don't really vary THAT much. I don't consider myself Georgian just because I live here. We're all pretty much the same, American. If you study the founding of the country you will ALSO notice that many of the early leaders wanted the federal government to have much more power than the states. Read up.

It is made like it for a reason. Some of the laws in Kentucky for example would be null in void in Oregon or different.

I disagree simply because there are two america's north & south, and it wouldn't acknowledge our freedom here in the USA.

Well, what I think what was usually intended for the US, is not what is is today. I'd think of each state as a little civilization. A few main laws by the government would rule, but the real laws are state.

"The federal laws are to be small and defined, and the federal are suppose to be (something)"

I highly disagree, don't have much time right now to go into details, but I'll be editing this post shortly. :)

There is no need, everyone has their own opinions and every state has their own set of rules and regs. When the US was first colonized they strived to stay away from being together as one country.

like a poster above said, new york is a busy city with a high population, therefore its speed limit should be lower then (cant name a non high populated city right now), having one speed limit is pretty dumb.

The great thing about it is that if you don't like the laws of one state, you can just move to another state that doesn't have those laws.

    No way in hell.

State by state is much better. I don't need some idiot in California making the laws for Maryland.

Speed limits of 80+ in the midwest ftw.
