Anyone good with ipod troubleshooting.

The other day when i connected my ipod to my computer it froze so i let the battery die. I went to charge it and it came up with a red x and told me to got to the apple support site. I did that it told me to put it into disk mode, when i try to do that it tells me to connect to a power source. When i connect it to my computer is says charging for about a minute, then displays the red x. I have a funny feeling the hard drive in it may have died, I'm hoping this isn't the case because a new hard drive would cost more than i payed for the ipod itself.
