Are you sure that the drive is a DVD drive and not a CD drive?

Also, Right click my computer --> properties --> hardware --> device manager
--> ide controllers --> advanced settings --> transfer mode, and make sure it says dma if available

Your disc drive is may be broken ,and just buy a external if its not a big deal money wise for you :D

Read his post carefully before responding ^_^

OP, make sure that you connected your drive properly. Does it show up in your BIOS?

If he just reinstalled his OS the actual connecting of the drive should not be efftected at all >_<

You never know. It's good to check the basics before moving on.

Press Del at bootup. Then go to the integrated peripherals and see if you can find your DVD Drive.

If I knew what your OS was, it'd be easier to help. But really all I can say without so is to check your driver.

Yea, try checking your BIOS the way xeleration directed.

    P.S - Get a newer OS ;)

Getting a new OS will not probably help his issue.
XP is preferred by most people because it does not have a ton of crap on it and is very easy to use.
Vista asks you are you sure if you want to do anything and I head windows 7 is pretty good though.

To check your BIOS, boot up your computer and press "Delete" at the post screen. If you need help doing this. Keep in mind its not always "Delete", but you'll see at your post screen text that says "Press <key here> to enter BIOS."
