That is a fully legit bungie.net forum message. This code was also valid. I checked as soon as I got it. Also there was no reason for it not to be, it was given to me for free by the person I leveled, I did not ask for a code to start with.

This is the image he sent me back. As you can see the codes match exactly. The code cannot be invalid if these codes were the same. If you try it on your xbox console, it will say code redeemed.
