xeL. Complete Guide to Jailbreaking: Free Apps, Customization, SSH Transfer and More

This guide was made for educational purposes only. I am not responsible for any damage to your iPod, iPhone, or other equipment as a result of attempted jailbreaking.
Windows users, this guide requires you have access to a computer running OSX. I will create a guide on how to properly use BlackRa1n to jailbreak devices on Windows in the near future.

1aa. Preparation and Precautions

In this guide I will be covering how to Jailbreak devices running the latest 3.1.2 software update. This includes iPhone 2G, 3G and 3G devices as well as iPod Tough original and 2G devices.

Before you begin to Jailbreak your device, please sync your data and perform a backup.



Once you finish the backup, you'll need to download some software in order to Jailbreak for phone:

Windows UsersCurrently only Mac users are able to Jailbreak devices, I will update with software for Windows Users as it becomes available.

Mac Users

2aa. Jailbreaking Your iPhone or iPod Touch

For this guide I will be Jailbreaking an iPhone 3GS running the 3.1.2 firmware.

To begin, create a folder and store both Pwnage Tool and the 3.1.2 firmware in it.



Run Pwnage Tool. Click "Okay" at the disclaimer to continue. In the upper right corner, you will see Simple Mode and Expert Mode. In order to achieve more customization, we will use Expert Mode. Now you can select your device and hit the blue arrow to continue.



Pwnage Tool will now search for the IPSW (firmware file) that you downloaded. Once it finds it, select it by clicking and hit the blue arrow to continue.



The next screen should look like this:



It's a little complex so I'll break it down:

General



Change your root partition size to 700mb and leave everything else default

Bootneuter Settings



Do not touch anything here

Cydia Settings



You can download custom Cydia packages on your Mac and preinstall them into the custom IPSW. Skip this if you don't know what you're doing

Custom Packages Settings



Leave this default or uncheck Icy if you wish to save space.

Custom Logo Settings



This should be self explanatory. Make sure your image is the right dimensions and browse for it.

When you're all done setting up your options, select Build and hit the blue arrow.



Pwnage Tool will now compile a custom IPSW.



Select No at the next prompt.



Pwnage Tool will now prompt you to connect your device. Connect it, and close iTunes when it launches automatically. Wait while your phone is put into Recovery Mode.

Once this is complete, close Pwnage Tool and open iTunes. It will prompt you to restore your iPhone which is now in recovery mode.

To restore from your custom IPSW, press and hold Alt/Option and click restore. Once your phone is successfully restored, your iPhone has been Jailbroken!

2ab. Staying Jailbroken After Updates

In order to allow users to stay Jailbroken after Apple's recent bootroom updates, ever Jailbroken device needs to register an ECID hash with Cydia.

To do so, navigate to Cydia on your device, open it, and tap the "Register Device with Cydia" button.



It should look like this when done.



After you have Jailbroken once, in order to preserve your Jailbreak, you should only update from IPSW's that have been cracked by Pwnage Tool.

3aa. Using Winterboard to Customize your Device

A brief intro to Winterboard:

iPhone and iPod Touches operate off "Springboard" for the themes, images, wallpapers, and other graphics used for your device.Winterboard allows you to easily customize your own graphics and themes.

To use Winterboard, you need to first download it from Cydia.



Go to Sections> Systems> Winterboard





The "Install" button is in the upper right corner.




Once you are done installing, restart Springboard.



Find the Winterboard App and open it. You can select items by tapping or drag them up in down (this changes priority/layering) by dragging on the right.




Once you're done customizing, simply hit the Home button to restart Springboard and save your settings.

4aa. Using Installous and Appulous to Download Apps

Installous is an App and Appulous a website created by the members of Hackulo.us. It is essentially a way for iPhone modders to share their Apps.

To install Installous on your device, you first need to go to Cydia.

Go to Manage>Sources then add the Repo (repository) http://cydia.hackulo.us.







Select your new source and download Installous.





Once downloaded, load up Installous, which acts as a browser for the website "http://appulo.us." From here you can browse or search by App name and other parameters. Once you find the App you like, simply download it, go to the download page, and install.

[/U]What is pSSH?

[LEFT]pSSH literally means "Phone Secure Shell." pSSH allows us to transfer files from our computer to our devices as long as they are both connected to the same router.

For this part of the guide I'll be using WinSCP.

To begin, we need to first install OpenSSH on our device. This can be found by going to Cydia and using the Search feature to find the package and install it.

Then we'll need to install WinSCP. You should get a screen that looks like this:

In the Hostname field we will enter the IP address of your device. To find this, go to Settings > WiFi > (Your Connection).

It should look like this.

Now we enter in the IP Address into the Host name field.
Leave everything default and use root/alpine for the username and password fields.

Hit save and login! It may take a moment so be patient.

If everything was successful you should see this screen.

You can now transfer files directly to your iPhone!
