How do I change a picture into an icon?

if i'm trying to apply a picture as an icon for a folder/file/program on my desktop, how do i make that picture an icon ?

I've tried putting it into a folder, then searching the folder, but then it says that there's no icon. I've tried saving it as .ico, doesn't work. >.<

 

Try replacing one of the default Windows icon with your custom icon.

 

You can use an online site such as this one to convert all of your .png images to .ico images (or .ico images to .png images).

If your image isn't already in .png format, do the following.
1. Open up the image with paint (if by default it doesn't open with paint, right click it and hit "Open With").
2. Paste your image into paint.
3. Click File->Save As
4. When the "Save As" dialog appears, make sure that under "File Type" you have "PNG (*.png)" selected
5. Save Your Image.

Now you can simply upload it to the site, and click on the "Download Now" button to download your image in .ico format.

 

First find a site for icons, choose one you like, save it into a folder called
"Icons" then go to the folder you want to change, right click and go to properties and go to change icon, find the file and click ok.
