Non-Specific Guide To Merchanting​

This is the most frequently asked question I get. I usually ignore the question. Merching is pretty much the 25th skill. It is a useful thing to know how to do and it can end up saving you something even more valuable than money in rs; your time.

I've decided to write up a non-specific merching guide. Some of you won't find it helpful at all, but for others it will open up a wide new world. It just depends on what you do with the information. I have bolded a few sentences and points, but read the whole thing or else it won't help you, since it is non-specific. It is also extremely basic.

This guide is not about telling you what to do, it's giving you concepts and helping you learn for yourself. I'm not going to give you fish, I'm going to teach you how to learn to fish so you can get your own. Nothing drives me more nuts than having people ask exactly what they should merchant and at what prices to buy and sell. This guide is not about standing in world 2, spamming at the ge, or trying to price manipulate with merch clans. This is how to solo merch in a way that won't take more than a few minutes of your time a day. I call myself a lazy, conservative mercher. Once you learn to do what I do, you can easily make 100 mil a month, and even more.

Clan merching/price manipulating relies on artifically raising the prices of an item in order to make money. Solo merching is about following the natural rise and fall of the market. The biggest mistake that people make when they try to solo merch for the first time is that they don't understand how to really merchant (because "clan merching" isn't merching!) They end up losing money because they think if they buy over mid then that will help the price go up.

People thought that the GE killed merchanting, but it actually made it easier and accessible to anyone and everyone. Merchanting is not a dirty word. There are three types of people who use the GE. People who want to buy something quickly, so pay higher prices. People who want to sell quickly, so sell at lower prices. And patient people (or merchanters), who buy from those who want to sell quickly, and sell to people who want to buy quickly.
