Redoing this thread to make it more objective.

Discuss healthcare in America here. Single payer, public option, keep it the same, get the government out completely, etc.

The US needs a system of public healthcare to provide for those who can not afford it. I have not been following what is going on now, but something needs to be done...

Here's a question regarding health care:

Do you think the stimulus package should be focused mostly on health care?

The economic one. I'm trying to ask if you think the U.S economic stimulus package should be focused on health care.

Health care as a whole, not picking out bits and pieces as it gets too complex.

One of the reasons healthcare is so expensive in the first place is because of government involvement. (Regulation & licensing especially)

How would that be a stimulus?

Well this is a multi-faceted argument. Private companies have a tendency to run more efficiently, but in the end, the government doesn't need to profit.

I mean basically, I see four scenarios. The government introduces a public option:
    1. It is too expensive(or non cost-effective), therefore no one switches to it.
    2. The government introduces one that is priced too cheap. The program itself goes bankrupt, while it forces other insurance companies to go bankrupt as well.
    3. It is provided as a reasonable alternative. Everyone is able to afford health insurance (slightly more tax) but those on healthcare already should not face any major problems. The insurance companies may choose to lower prices based on a new competitor in the market.
    4. Nothing is done about healthcare. The economy continues to get worse, or it gets better and everyone forgets that it was an issue...

If a public option is introduced, it has to be extremely well designed/maintained. It's a feasible idea, and I think besides solving some possible healthcare issues, it could address the growing inequality of opportunties in America.

    ^^^ This
Really i don't think it should be a topic under debate. People should have affordable healthcare and if the government has to subsidize it, so be it. Honestly a bigger problem is vaccines. They are hyped up by the companies that produce them, and just waste money.

Health care is way to expensive for the government to handle and if you just look at all other contries that have already adopted it you'll see all the negative impacts. The level of health care lowers, doctors arn't paid as much after all their years of school (less pay = less doctors) and it aids to even more illegals. Wth? :p

    1. You need citizenship to be treated, last time I heard?
    2. What does where they were born, have to do with anything? The waiting list is backed up for years on citizenship.

Again what? I don't get it. Doctors need training. The problem is the capitalization of the health care market, not the governments involvement.

    Why?

And even with current government subsidies healthcare costs are thru the roof. I guess we need more government.

As i stated before, USA needs universal healthcare. It works in other countries and we can use France as an example. That was Obama's original plan until he stepped down.

What do you plan on doing with those who don't want a single payer system? And further, why is such a system superior?

There has to be some middle ground, between achieving the most equality and efficiency. I don't think anyone can really say that our current system is running ideally, despite it's heavy capitalist influence.

    Define fair and appropriate.

I think government health care would be great because everyone will be able to be covered.

The insurance companies decide who lives and who dies based on mathmatic equations. Would you like to die because you don't meet the quota?
