Should homosexuals have the right to get married?

Yeah they should be allowed to. They are human after all. I'm sure that if it was you in their shoes you would want it too. It's respected an opinion. They aren't being an extremist or trying to get attention (most of them anyways)

Of course it should be allowed. Personally, I'm not gay and it's against my religion, but you shouldn't try to make laws or force people into things based on YOUR religion.

 

Okay, this whole "Don't have to be religious to have morals" thing is getting ridiculous. I'm an Atheist? Do I have morals? Of course I do. In fact I'm a more moral person than pretty much all of my religious friends. The thing that's getting me is this.... Is homosexuality immoral? Of course not! There's no reasonable excuse to try and say that it is. As far as I'm concerned, morals pertain to things that are followed to protect oneself and the people around them. I have a personal moral not to drink because I could be endangering myself. I have a personal moral not to kill people because, obviously, it kills people. However, homosexuality is not harming anybody. You can have religious morals, or human morals, but no matter how you cut it, there is NOTHING immoral about homosexuality. In some cases it is sacrilegious, but never immoral. So for anyone to try and justify their claims with that is just plain ridiculous.

The same thing applies to laws as well. Laws exist to protect three things. The people, the rights of the people, and the country. Well homosexuality isn't harming anyone, so you can check off the first one. Banning the marriage of two homosexuals on a legal level is a complete infringement of rights, so check off the second one. And unless the rules have changed, homosexuality isn't a matter of national security, so check off the third thing as well. Now what do we have here? A law with no rightful backing. Who can justify a law that directly contradicts the purpose of it's existence? Well that, I'm afraid, is the question no one's willing to answer.

 

The founding fathers practiced slavery. Should we reinstitute that because that's what our nation was "Founded on?"

Marriage is a human right, not a heterosexual privelege.

Let's say that wasn't the norm and people wanted you to convert to being gay.
How easy would it be for you to do this when you legitimately, truly love your girlfriend?
Now think for a second about not being able to marry the woman you love, nor have any of the same legal privileges.
She gets into a car wreck, she's on life support, she's bleeding, and finally she passes away - you didn't get to see her in her last moments all because some bigot assholes deny you the same legal rights as every other citizen in the US.

That last part was just to illustrate the more extreme consequences of unequal opportunity.

Even if they aren't allowed to marry now, they will be able to in the future. Recent years have shown a steady increase in political, domestic, and overall support for equality in marriage/equal rights under the law.
Just as black people were once segregated, people who love someone of the same gender are persecuted - however this is changing for the better I believe.
This isn't about the "sanctity of marriage" as some people call it; ask anyone who's ever been married or in a committed relationship -
it's about love

Love is an emotion and banning someone from expressing it in a lawful, legitimate manner is discrimination pure and simple.

 

Umm...No, you actually got that off the top of your head. Laws are usually made to control the power of the government over the people (usually in the form of Constitutional amendments) and in turn people's power over the government (can be in both national and state laws), and finally to ensure that people can't interfere with the freedoms over other people (also national and state laws). Some laws are exceptions to this rule, such as ones that interfere with people's freedom to do what they like to themselves such as drug laws.

This comes from the Federalist papers and John Locke's theories on the principles of human nature, not the top of my head.

Personally, for me it comes back to the wonderful issue of plain and simple love - and age slipping in on the sidelines ^^

Really though, if two men or women are in love, they have as much right as anyone else in the world to get married, be it wherever they are - although possibly be selective about the guest list, as although some people wont mind, some may in more than just a small way. >_<

 

marraige is about love. if two people love each other they should be able to get married, if its 2 boys, a boy and a girl, or 2 girls it does not matter. The fact that the government doesn't let them is extremely fucked up. Everyone is suppose to be equal, yet people can't get married to people they love because they are the same sex? what the fuck is that?

But the history of christianity is soaked in blood, so i don't think that a religion should have anything to do with a formal union.

Also from my perspective the bible can't be all right, can it? I thought Finn made this topic way back in the day before he was all modded and stuff? I remember debating it with him way back then.

As I stated back then I still feel the same way now. Homosexual marriage is completely 100% ok as long as it is in no way affiliated with the church. Having a civil ceremony marriage that is recognized by the government so the spouse gets some of the money in a divorce or inherits it when they die is perfectly fine. They deserve it if they spent there life with them. Just my opinion though.

I think they at least deserve a civil ceremony marriage to receive benefits and inherits. But, a religious marriage is a NO for me. The bible does not approve with the same sex relationships.
