Got scammed - need help with chargeback

Hey guys, i got scammed today. Sent approx $60 via paypal as gift and didnt receive what i was paying for. I DID pay with my credit card so i see that ive got two options: go to my bank and ask for a chargeback or claim that my paypal account was hacked.

Im not sure on which to do. If i say to paypal my account was hacked when it wasnt will they follow it up? Am i doing something illegal by saying that i was hacked when i wasnt?

Same goes with the bank... Theyll only do a chargeback if its the merchants fault or my credit card details were stolen.

So my question is... what do you guys recommend i do?

No, I would not lie about an unauthorized payment. It doesn't work. Paypal can easily check your login time, spending habits, and IP. These will all point to you as the personw ho made the payment.

I recommend you file a chargeback.

It was a runescape account. What should i say to the bank? I rang them up and just made a general enquiry and they asked if the payment was made in error to which i replied yes. She then said that it would have to be the merchants error.

Does this sound about right? If it is, what could i say instead?

 

By claiming it was the merchant's error, you wouldn't be in the wrong.
The reason I advised you to go with a chargeback is because I know from personal experience that lying about unauthorized payments to Paypal doesn't work. You also can't claim non-receipt because Paypal doesn't cover virtual items.

I have had customers who have (sadly) successfully used bank rollbacks to get their money back. If possible I'd ask your bank what kind of information they'll need from you in order to file a chargeback, then decide if thats the course of action you would want to take.

you should put the payment as unauthorized , if that dont work call ur CC company and ask for them to demand refund from paypal . that should work

okay i rang my cc company and they advised me that i can only do a chargeback if the payment was unauthorised (cc stolen, biller charged twice for same thing, charged too much etc) or if the item wasnt recieved.

 

"Item wasn't received" that seems to be the case for you so you should be fine just tell ur cc company to cancel the payment.

Don't suggest that your personal experiences trump mine. However lucky you may have been, it is clearly not a definite solution. I doubt soldo would want to risk his money over a "should work."

 

Yeah, im only going to get one chance at this. If i do file a chargeback and paypal says the transaction is actually valid then my bank will charge me another 10 bux >.<

 

Tell them exactly what happened, you sent the money to the seller as a gift after his request, he didn't send you the item you payed for. It really is simple.
