    k - 12 education

I thought this would be a interesting debate seeing as my earlier education has caused problems for me. Do you think k - 12 education is to easy im not talking about ap or honors classes but college prepatory classes and regular classes in general. Is it because of the education system that kids, teenagers grow up lazy. Society has always set low standards in pre college education so i feel this is a weakness in the system. I mean someone can get all C's or low marks and still get a diploma from school. This prepares the individual for nothing because he carrys the same mentality he did in k - 12 to college. Statistics show that individuals in their first year of college fail miserably. I on the other hand went to a crappy school which didnt help in the first place. The school did not adequately prepare me for the real world or uni. I came into uni with a low gpa and now thankfully i have a high gpa because of hard work and sacrifice. Wrapping it up, please post your opinions on this. Should there be a change or not in the education system.

The US education system is terrible and does not prepare you for uni or the real world. Ther should be change.

So you want to know if regular classes and remedial classes are easy? Why yes, yes they are. Thats what AP and honors are.
If somebody is too lazy to get into those or at least make high grades in regular, then what good would making education harder do? Lazy people will stay lazy.

Its up to the individual person to make a change in his life. Everyone has the same potential, you just need the drive to get ahead of others; this is my opinion.

School is as hard or easy as you make it... If you do the work and have a desire to learn the material, I don't really understand how you could have trouble doing so. Honors and APs aren't that difficult either... Read your text book, follow the lecture, study the material until you understand it. :S

Granted, I'm a little lazy so my AP class marks aren't as high as they could be. But fuck it. A letter says nothing about me as a person.

Also, this isn't really an open-ended discussion as far as I can tell. If you aren't challenged by AP classes, take college courses. Dual enrollment...

Highschool has very little to do with learning most of the time, it's mostly how well you can retain memory in short term and doing useless repetitive homework.

Depends what school you go to, some schools take education and discipline seriously and others don't.

I think high school is a fucking joke. You forget 80% of the factual information you learn within 2 years, and thats basically all they give a shit about. I of course go to a private quaker college prep school, but I still hate it since they hire all fucking young teachers that do not know how to fucking teach. I really do not see much of a point of school. I also hate it.

U.S. educational systems don't prepare you for the real world. Many education systems don't prepare you for the real world.

    Why, though?

The ability to quote memorized information is barely(if even) scratching the surface of what we'll need to face the reality of today's real world.

But, no, they take away our ability to think freely, express our opinions, and gain true intelligence and ways of thinking, and give us crack-pot explanations of what the real world will be, figuring that by time we get there, we won't have any fight left in us to prove them wrong.

    It's pathetic.

This is one of the reasons I utterly hate school. Although I go to a Quaker school which focuses completely on teaching you how to think basically, I still hate memorizing shit. Thats all my history class is and all I do is bitch about it, but the teacher is like 24 and an idiot.

Why go to med school? Unless you are going to move to a free country, or if this bill doesn't get passed, it isn't a good idea.

Kevin mentioned private educations for all. He is right. In D.C. tax payers have to pay twice as much per child for public school than do Parents of children in private schools.

It's not the level in difficulty of the material that causes people to be lazy. It's the way this material is presented. It takes a "good" teacher to not only know their material, but to be able to present it to their students in a manner that would be able to retain their interests.

Finally a good topic. I feel exactly the same. K-8 I would sleep in school or just talk to friends and when the time came to take a test I would easily Ace it. I never understood why other kids thought school was hard. The answers were in the book you are reading from. Also teachers help kids to much nowadays. I started high school this year and I couldn't wait to actually be challenged, but unfortunately its about the same. I am taking advance classes and our teachers give us too much time to complete our homework and projects or they help us too much. Incredibly easy.

I know people in public schools that are taking the hardest courses offered at the school and they many times spend 12 hours doing homework on the weekends... For just one class many times it seems like it takes them like 3 hours to do. >_>.

I've really found in public school in general they load you down with too much homework for no reason other than just to give you busy work. And I've got to write an essay. So. D:

It's not that they are lazy, it's that they are just aware of the fact that most of the shit they are learning is pointless and that they will forget everything after the class is over. Therefore the loss of care for school work.
