Does it make you a nerd to spend money on runescape?

Heya guys I was just wondering what you guys thought about this topic.

I had 2 weeks of work which allowed me to do five eight hour shifts per week for the full two weeks. This really was a one off but from this I got £1250 and decided to spend it on runescape since I like to play it when I have the time.

With it I was able to afford a maxed account with 2376 total level and 700m on it.

Now here is my question. Why do people consider it to be 'nerdy' to spend real money on runescape? With just 80 hours of hard work I was able to afford an account that would take thousands of hours to create.

I have to admit I was one of the people that thought it was crazy to spend money on runescape but when you look at it closer isn't it a little nerdy to want to spend huge amounts of time behind a computer screen to achieve the same results?

So does it make me a nerd to want to avoid playing all those hours? I get the same result but with far less effort and time don't I?

I would accept the term lazy sure but would you class it as 'nerdy'?

Runescape is a game. Games are meant to have some sort of "achievement value", which you are not getting by just buying your characters/items. I'd much rather spend money on things like family/girlfriend, personal items (TV/Xbox/iPod etc) than have a maxed character on RS.

So in my opinion.. Yes, extremely nerdy to spend that amount of money on a game.

 

Thanks for the opinion. I fully agree that the achievement factor is something I will miss out on.

But I have reached a few 99's on my own and I know how the endless skilling is never worth the result (In my opinion).

I just find that the achievment factor doesn't outweigh the time it consumes from my life.

Plus I would rather hang out with my gf than aim to spend money on her. So in many ways I free up more time this way to do that as well. Rather than killing something for hours on end to get some mils for example I can sit back and relax with her.

Everything is depended on perception. Like for instance, you feel like it was worth it. Frankly, I think it was worth it too.

On to the topic. Well, I am bias about it being nerdy. In one case, yes, it is nerdy because a game is a game, but we all pay to have the member ship, so your just spending it on a game to enjoy it at a higher capability. The nerdyness factor varies with the passion for the game.

On the next note, it's your money, you can do whatever you want with it. So, to be honest, I'm perfectly fine with you spending that much because you worked hard and that's what you think it was worthwhile to get.

Hmm intersting idea on the 'passion for the game' part. So do I have less passion for the game if I am willing to buy the account as I don't want to go through the process of getting it myself?

Just wondering what your point of view would be on that since people with the passion, I assume, would be the people that get the accounts/mils by themselves rather than buying them right?

Don't get me wrong I like the game and I like to play it. It's just I am not willing to put the hours in to achieve say 99 rc and spend 6 months solid doing the same thing over and over.

I guess I lack real dedication to the game where as real money motivates me more. Also I could always sell this account again if it ever came to it. It's not like I have been stuck with something of no value.

 

I understand your point of view. I feel the same way about the mindless grinding. It's rather stupid and HUGE waste of time. That's why I've never gotten a 99 legitly

I didn't mean to come off as calling you nerdy in my last post if that's what it sounded like. It's your money, do what you want with it.

 

I buy stuff for the investment.
Eg buying a 2 char name / multispaced name bc of rarity, and value will increase over time
But buying to profit your own character is messed up and yes, nerdy.

Passion is like how you see the game. Like, others, are diehard fans and play it as much as they can. It doesn't take out the "passion" part that you aren't willing to put in the time to get 99 rc. Frankly, I wouldn't either.

And very true, you have an arsenal of great fortune in your possession. You can do a lot. You can go out and play on the character as much as you want and when you feel like the "pizz-azz" is gone, you can always sell it and renew your money.

 

Mattjew - You said your opinion which is all I was asking for in this thread. I wanted to see what other people had to say and if it isn't exactly what I want to hear then how can I complain lol? I had the exact same opinion until I got a job and realised how much time I spent on the game when I could easily buy the account that took me 2 years to make in a matter of days.

Mike - Intersting way to make money. So advancing in the game by spending money is what you consider to be nerdy. Hmm that makes membership nerdy though... Still I can see where you are coming from.

Syrianska - If you can honestly say you made an account worth 600 Euro's in a week then I would 100% agree with you. But after all that time and effort you put into that account you are only getting 600 Euro's out of it. Yes you had fun doing it (I would hope) but you could have got that account in 1 week by working for the money. You forget that I can sell my account again once I am done with it possibly at a higher price. With this in mind I am having a better time on a game I enjoy for no real extra cost.

Krayzie Bone - That is pretty much the conclusion I have come to. Enjoy it as much as I can while I can ^.^

 

I voted no, If you worked for your money you can do what you want with it. However if i where you and had that much cash to splash on runescape i would start up a shop to buy and sell runescape accounts, if you did it right you would get profits from it and with the profits you could buy an account and keep like 1k for what ever you wanted

thats like saying buying membership is nerdy because you spent money to have more stuff/fun

I think a shop would spoil the fun for me as I don't have much free time in the first place hence buying the account. Yes making money is nice (who doesn't like money?) but I have a job for that.

I think that would be a great way to make money if I were younger though and end up with a great account too =D

ssylass - Well said ^.^. I want to enjoy my life and if part of that is spending an hour or so on a game then I think the two weeks of wages were well worth it.

It doesn't make you nerdy. I just think you could have spent it on something more, or saved the money and gained intrest.

Joker - Thanks but I would like more of an opinion as to why you agree with me =)

LOLOYOMO - True the value of other things can and does come above a game. But RS is something I do weekly and due to a job I am spending less time on the game. So the time I would have spent on the game is now generating an income and the time that I now play on RS is more enjoyable for me. Plus I am not really an expensive person. I have pretty much everything I want and if a time comes where something more important such as gf/family arises that requires money then I will sell the account if needs be.
