One thought I had, genetically engineered babies will eventually turn into genetically engineered old people. Do we have enough genetic knowledge to predict how GE would affect someone in late life?

It's more a question of genetic disorder. Should babies with Down Syndrome or color blindness have these deficiencies if it can be prevented?

If it is to alter a specific look (eye color, hair color, etc.) I would have to say no. On the other hand, nobody wants their baby to have a mental disability, or to be blind, etc. and I think that if we can take steps to prevent those kind of things then I would definitely be for that.

Well, I to be honest, I don't like the idea really. Its basically saying 'Oh I want my child to be the best, so I will have them genetically engineered instead of having them in the normal manor'. It would breed a sense of competition, and you would end up with rivalry between parents. Plus, if a genetically engineered child was widely known to be genetically engineered, it might have problems with other people (eg. may get bullied etc.). I think we should keep things natural to be honest.

Of course preventing a disability would be logical to allow, but i'm sure others would take advantage of this, and alter their babies to how they'd like them to be. Say...Blue eyes, blonde hair?
    Haha.

But it it wouldn't be original. Being good at something should be because of hard work and dedication in making oneself stronger and more fit, not because of fusing strands of DNA to make the "perfect" baby.

If it is ultimately for the good of the child's health I would have to agree, though I am almost 100% certain that this would not be the case, somewhere along the line there would be consequences for doing so, either a mistake in the process of the engineering or some other cost of producing the chemicals/drugs/resources to modify these babies.

So, what I read from some posts here is that we should not use genetics to treat genetic diseases and defects because it could potentially be used to get an advantage in sports?

Fair point, but this is going to take the rivalry to a whole new level. It will turn into a case of the richest people having the 'best' children, which is unfair. Other kids aren't going to appreciate other children being better than them, simply because their parents paid to have them genetically modified so that they would be better than others. Before anyone says 'Who said anything about paying', I highly doubt that this service would ever be offered free.

Furthermore, it will mess up sport aswell. It will unbalance it loads, which I think would be a bad thing to happen. If you have a football team made up of all genetically engineered humans, who end up playing a team of normal people, it makes things completely unfair. I think we should leave this kind of stuff alone, it changes far to much.

I beleive that it's right if it stops genetic diseases such as Huntington's Disorder.
But I beleive that some are actually abusing this idea, requesting for specific details such as they want their son/daughter to have blue eyes or blonde hair and such.
I also agree with Bad_Moose, where he stated it'll make sport un-fair, genetically engineered humans will have a completly un-fair advantage and it'll take the equality and fairplay out of sport.

In some ways, it's right, in others it's wrong, that's just my opinion, but I beleive that humans are tampering too much these days.

I don't believe that genetically engineered babies are as bad when you just alter them, but if at some point we get to the place where we engineer the sperm and egg, then no.
