An intellectual observation of the addiction of Runescape

    Hey,
It was merely a week ago I decided to quit runescape. I think everyone who is obsessed over it should too. Runescape always has played a big part in my life since I was nine. I will list a few reasons why it's addictive and why people choose to keep playing it.

    Belonging:
Runescape was an open discussion between me and some friends in my early years of school. People who play Runescape are in it together, so to speak. Quitting might prove hard in certain social situations as it might isolate one from normal conversations with peers. Anybody can log onto the virtual world and be somebody. Life sucks. As said by many within the thread, clans also persuade their members to keep on playing! You're part of a community now.. there's no way out >=D

    Charactersiation:
Your virtual character may in some ways, be a representation of yourself. I found that the Leveling achievments I obtained in the game gave me great satisfaction in real life. Why? - Well I believe that your character gives you something to live for, something to create and help throughout your simple life. RPG's rely on people like us to get suckered into forming an obsession with something that belongs so deeply to us.

    Entertainment:
As all video games, Runescape is made for one sole purpose, to make money. To make money, you must persuade your buyers into purchasing using emotional targeting and attraction, similar things. Starting off free, the world is very small. Levelling starts quickly and things seem very interesting. By the time you're a member and have played a year, you might find that the effort you put in is definitely not rewarded with pleasure. Why do you still play? That's the big question. To hell with, what happens when we die or how was the universe made.. Why the hell do we still want to do something that we obviously loathe. Well, to cut it short, our emotions conflict and eventually persuade us to stick with what we're used to - In a confusing manner.

Alright, so this is just my intellectual observation of addiction in Runescape. I'd just like to say, people who own maxed pures really have to start considering what they get out of it. Also, I'd like to point out that I'm sick of idiots using than and then at inappropriate times. Then is generally a reference to a point in time, for example - Then it was dusk and the animals approached me. Than is a comparative word used whilst comparing objects - Man, I'd have to say that this vase is much better ""THAN"" the other one or for you people who freaking say then all the time.. My skills are higher than yours.

If you share my views, please feel free to reply.
If you disagree, please tell me why.
    Sigh.
Is this even a poem or is this all a lie?

    Guinea pig dude.

The internet is not the place to post serious topics (you won't find many serious replies to this thread - don't feel downhearted though).

I agree with your observations. I find it hard to quit because I have invested so much in this game not just time, but real life hard earned cash :(. And I feel that if I stop now it would have all gone to waste - but if I don't stop... then I am just feeding the addiction.

I gotta say I commend you on quitting - never come back to the game - do yourself a favour and whenever it pops into your head just think of horrible, horrible things - like your parents dying and during the last few hours of their lives you were training on Runescape (the more horrible, perhaps even ridiculous, the better). Eventually whenever the idea of playing Runescape pops into your head you'll be able to throw it out the fucking window and move on to bigger and better things.

    Cheers for posting the thread.

I just quit runescape again for the last time, im done with the game now, i played for about 6 years, and the last year- year and a half i only played because of the clan i used to run, i had alot of friends, about 50 or so people who i would refer to as family, might sound sad but i loved them all, i quit just before the summer holidays and came back about a month ago to help out, i played for about a month untill this morning when i just couldn't do it anymore, i really don't like the game, and feel free now i've quit.

I'd say about 20% of the players in the game[if not more]only play runescape for their clans.

I never had a clan but i ve played for 5 years..
But i cant quit, im too addicted cuz even if i sell all of my accs, ill think that the time i spent on the game and the skill aquired during those 5 years would be wasted
i just cant quit, ill always find a reason to continue lol

In my opinion, most of people who are obsessed to Runescape are immature in real life (I don't mean immature as laughing at sexual words but in the way that you're too young to understand real things) and didn't realize yet that it's only a virtual games that gives you nothing in real life except satisfaction (when completing a goal) or deception (when losing something valuable in-game as in getting pked).

It's alright that you want to quit but you should not ask for others to, since everyone has their choice to make and I guess they'll choose to quit at the right time for themselves.

And about the ''then'' and ''than'' I think you should leave people with their mistakes because no one is perfect and I'm pretty sure not all of us, sythers, speaks english as first language.

runescape for me is my version of watching TV, despite the fact that i only pk and bot anymore is irrelevant.

Quitting would not change my life in anyway, if you join a school sport, do extra curricular activities, or get a job you will learn that it is not the sole purpose of your life you just do it when you have nothing better to do.

I agree with this, I only play if I'm bored. Similar to if someone played Xbox 360 when they're bored. They both entertain you, and as long as you can keep it controlled there isn't anything wrong with playing.

The only reason I play RS is because I'm bored. And wanted to get back into it. Lowkey boring as well.

Yeah, it is just a thing to put boring time into. I don't play it nearly as much as I used to and I'm going to quit soon. I just want to finish up on some goals. :)

Yeah man, some interesting responses. Will have to add the clan bit. I feel that comes under belonging. I have only scratched the surface to why people still play a lot.

Exercising every day and having a great social life gives you nothing in real life except satisfaction.
