Also, I think he means, put the pentool energy lines above the Black/White layer so it's only the pentool lines that are coloured.

 

I really really like the colored one, the whole flow to it and the amount of energy just stands out to me.

I love them both. But, as for the colored, there's some turnoffs in my opinion. It seems too desaturated as colored. And, the blue from the render itself is a bit in the background. It seems like you took colors from the render and overlayed the render itself. I like your newer style a lot.

You COULD add a very soft white stroke with a like 50% opacity just so it stands out a little more... Other than that, they both look fairly well done!
