What wrong with using a term? Practically anything can kill you if you're old enough. Even stuff that a 20-year old could walk off in a week.

People have longer life spans now than ever before (disregarding biblical figures who supposedly lived for close to 1.000 years:laugh: ), so I don't see where we "screwed ourselves over".

This is true. Is this because of what we do and how we act? I guess theoretically we should live forever.

There was no need for a double post.

Were not speaking about any referance to biblical figures. What that phrase meant, we created so much harm and pollute the earth that we screw ourselves over for unnecessary reasons.

I have never heard of that but thank god for the tiny defect in our DNA or whatever it is that kills us.

Why the hell would you want that? I'd welcome the chance to live as long as I like.

I'd like to live as long as im able to do stuff in the world. I dont find it necessary to be 80+ sitting at home bored. I'd rather live my life as long as i can then be done

Well presumably if whatever causes aging is stopped you wouldn't have to get all wrinkly and gross :p

    Botox :p

On topic: Its interesting when you think about it, and obviously knowone sane wants to die, if there was to ever be anything that could keep us alive for alot longer (don't think forever would be possible) it would involve stem cells, the cells that adapt to repair and make stuff in your body (im not a scientist) idk if its possible to import cells from other people but i guess its possible, would like to live a little longer then the average 70 odd years :embar: Not particularly religious, quite skeptacle, so death scares me, alot :'(

Sounds like a load of shit to me. xD Do they have any proof of this at all? Pure speculation.

Not true. Cells don't "lose quality" every time they divide. You're referring to Orgel's hypothesis (1963) which was proven highly unlikely in Strehler's Time, Cells, and Aging in 1999.

More recent research (WebMD) has shown that DNA damage plays a role in aging, but it's based on lifestyle and environmental factors, and isn't there just for the sake of it.

Maybe if we make Uber Hax for cells we could live forever, but that would kind of suck because dying would mean you miss out on infinity so everybody would be really cautious, and people would have suicide cults saying that death is God's way etc. So the current system is pretty good.
Also, the population would increase too quickly.

I remember reading this exact same thing in a magazine, apparently we were meant to live a lot longer than we currently do. Certain mutations in our DNA have different effects though, for instance the DNA mutation CCR5 makes those who carry this mutation immune to HIV/Aids. If you had ancestors that caught the plague, you most likely have this mutation. I personally got this from a book, but you can visit here for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CCR5

No we weren't, and that's not what he's saying.

DNA = Deoxyribonucleic acid...Mutation = Change in DNA
    CCR5 = Protein

Don't use terms that you can't bite into, or understand.

I suggest you take a basic course in bio-chemistry before you continue to make silly assertions.

In laymen terms, I'll do you a favor an educate you. Let's begin
    1. DNA is command center, that dictates how protein production works.
    2. CCR5 is a protein, found on the out edge of macrophages (a basic form of white blood cells). CCR5 is important because it acts as basically an essential hook or receptor in which the HIV virus tries to "latch on to" to gain entry.
    3. Drugs try to stop this receptor from functioning, and a small DNA mutation could make people less susceptible. (DNA's control proteins)
    4. There is nothing such as the "DNA mutation CCR5"

So no, you don't know what you are talking about.

As we age our DNA gets shorter.

It's impossible to stop this process.
