What happens... When you are... Dead?

Humans aren't the only beings that have existed, though.

Like a few of you here, I sometimes sit and imagine an after-life where I was reborn(Cycle repeats itself), or some other variation of eternity.

Nonetheless, until I die, I have no choice but to say:

You rot in the ground with really long fingernails.

But why does the brain send out those chemicals? If you choose think that your life is over because your girlfriend has dumped you, the brain will send out chemicals that make you sad. But if you choose to think that your girlfriend has dumped you and you are free to go have fun with other girls, then the brain will send out different chemicals that make you happy. Some people are also better at mentally controlling their emotions, which leads to controlling the chemicals sent out in their bodies. So in fact, we do actually control the chemicals we send out through our body. I might have not worded it correctly in my other post, but that's what I meant.

You cease to exist. Your mind shuts down and everything ends - like a deep sleep, except that it's just over. You're gone.

Also, there is not "infinity" time before us. Earth is about 4.5 billion years old, and due to the Big Bang theory, each galaxy is speeding away from each other, and will continue to do so until matter is stretched to the point where we all turn into goo (thankfully, this is millions of years down the road).

The Big Crunch is bull. Galaxies are moving faster and faster, not slower.

Then throw in rational thought, DMT, and dreaming, and things get a little more complicated. We are the only creatures we know of that are aware of our existence and can delve into philosophy. We also have dreams, when our bodies shut down and our minds become sort of disconnected from the physical world. And, the same chemical that makes us dream, is released in mass amounts the moment before death.

These are all extremely interesting points to consider, but they all can have logical explanations. Rational thought can be an evolutionary tool, which is why we are at the top of the food chain. And DMT can be a chemical that is used by nature to distract you from the pain of death and help you transition to death. Or maybe DMT is released before death to transfer us to the after life, and dreaming is used to remind us that this world is not all there is. There's no proof for what dreaming and DMT is for, which lets me make up my own reason.

The human body is merely a vessle that holds your soul while you search for enlightenment. When it can no longer hold your soul... like any other vase or vessle it breaks. And we repeat this process of suffering until we reach enlightenment and pass on to nibana.

A very Buddhist/Hindu way to veiw things but this explaination makes me at ease with dying.

"The man who has lived wisely fears not even death."

Wrong. The skin on the body only shrinks and the roots of the hair is forced out making it appear as though one's hair is growing.

    A little fun fact :p

Wow, this makes so much sense to me. What does "enlightenment" signify though? Does it mean understanding the world around you and understanding life, or does it have to do with just being a good person?

The only reason why there's any speculation whatsoever is because after death, there is no consciousness. Don't you realize that death is like any other natural function, like birth, or sleep, or eating? Nothing strange or arcane happens before, during, or after these actions are completed. The things in this world that are impossible to know are the ones that are always tied to religion. (how the universe was formed, what happens after we die, etc) Just because we lose consciousness forever after we die, shouldn't mean that anything weird happens. The only reason why people think that is because it's impossible to prove otherwise.

Why does your mood change when you take a certain chemical? Because chemicals control your brain.

I know what you're trying to say. Just look at dopamine, it isn't released by itself, it needs to be triggered by an emotion (happiness) to be released OR by another chemical (ex. Coke). So I think we can't really debate this.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Sensors in your body, such as nerves, (optic, etc) pick something up from the world around you.
    2. They send a message to your brain telling it what you have encountered.
    3. The brain renders that as either a good message (one that benefits the body) or a bad one (one that harms the body).
    4. The brain sends messages back to the nerves and any other organs that may be involved, to react to what has happened.
    Example:
You touch a stove. The nerves in your hand tell your brain what has happened. Your brain renders this as a bad thing. It sends a quick message to the muscles in your arm to pull the hand away quickly. This all happens in less than a second.

This is basically how it happens with anything. For there to be a mood, there has to be a stimulant. Mood doesn't come first because it's your brain's reaction to a stimulant.

I think there's simply nothing... and you can't imagine there being "nothing" because by 'thinking' there is actually something contradicts it.

Yeah but lets say at first, you care what other people say about you. So when someone says something mean to you or about you, you get angry and sad, which means your brain is flooding your body with chemicals. But then later on, you learn to not give a fuck what people say, so next time someone says something about you, you just don't care and these chemicals aren't sent out through your body. Same stimulus, but different reaction.

You are right that a stimulant from the world around you controls what your brain does to you, but we do have some control over this depending on how mentally and emotionally strong we are.
