Should elevators and escalators be illegal?

Well I see many of you happily agree that the government should fine people who don't care about their own safety for their own good, so how about this:

Elevators and escalators kill about 30 and injure about 17,000 people each year in the US. Elevators cause about 90% of the deaths and 60% of the injuries.

Elevators and escalators can possibly cause serious injury or death, so how about we have someone stand guard by every elevator and escalator and fine you a large amount if you chose to use an elevator or escalator. This will get people to use the stairs, which is a much safer option, so they can avoid paying the fine. Plus, people will burn much more calories and get fit by using the stairs!

Do you agree with this or no? Why?

A simpler comparison would be to make cars illegal.

The lives lost and the injuries is worth it for the convenience and accessibility to disabled, among other benefits.

It been proven time and time again that seatbelts can save lives and reduce injury. There disadvantage is that they cause minor discomfort. You may argue other disadvantages but none of them are significant compared to the reduce in chances of death and injury.

Thinking with a logical standpoint it makes sense in almost all situations so wear a seatbelt.

People that do not wear a seatbelt may be ignorant to the risks, or have little value of there life and well being.

People who are ignorant shouldn't face permanent injuries. How would you feel if as a child you were riding you're bike without a helmet -- unaware of the risk-- fell on you're head giving yourself a permanent mental disability.

From the same standpoint people who don't value there life or well being shouldn't suffer permanent disabilities. Often lows like this may be a phase, and there's always a chance it will change.

Police giving tickets to those who don't wear seatbelts gives people another reason to wear them. Having a person get a permanent disability for those reasons isn't fair. Sure life isn't fair, but if you can make it more fair you should.

 

Just take the stairs. There's no reason to get rid of escalators and elavators just because of a few mishaps.

 

Sure, they kill and injure people across the year, but, exactly, how logical WOULD it be?

A man is late for a meeting in a small new company he's an intern in. Should he spend his paycheck on taking the elevator, or spend >15 minutes taking 50 flights of stairs to the top floor? He would probably be fired if he was late enough for the meeting, and/or would still have the equivalent of not getting a paycheck due to the money he payed to not be late.

I don't think you thought it through.

Possible death by carelessness shouldn't be a reason enough for an outlaw. The sun causes skin cancer but even if so, if used responsibly, sun bathing shouldn't be outlawed.

What is the likeliness. 17,000 out of the hundreds of millions Americans. I don't think I would happen. They've been around for years, and in my opinion work pretty darn well.

 

People who are able-bodied should take the stairs. It actually burns a lot of calories anyways.

But don't make these things illegal, because people who are handicapped have to ride in an elevator. Show me where a man in a wheelchair can make it up a flight of stairs by himself. ._.

 

Make them illegal except in sky scrapers and for disabled people.

 

What effects would having to pay for a convienence used everyday by millions of people have on the economy in the long run?

Disregarding that, if people had to pay for escalators and elevators, and instead used the stairs, I have no doubt that the number of injuries/deaths would increase by the cause of stairs.

Imagine if 45 people in a building decided not to pay for the elevator. That's 45 people getting somewhere quickly without harm coming to them in exchange for 45 people possible rummaging into each other on 5 flights of stairs to get to their meetings. 45 People in any business is a heavy cost and a large burden on production.

Also, imagine 25 of those people don't bathe daily.

So, you know, 6,000 deaths are caused by stairs outside of the home per year. Should stairs be banned? No

 

Stairs are worse especially when climbing down 50 flights of stairs with hundreds of people because they don't want to pay the fair. Someone would trip and bring everyone done lol. 1000s of injuries a day.

 

I'm pretty sure I just said that.

Nonetheless, I doubt injuries would reach the thousands. I could only hope that humanity was smart enough to realize, "Well, maybe we shouldn't use these stairs", when they saw all of the other lifeless bodies.

"Unintentional". If people were sticking forks in their eyes to the point where it was considered to be made illegal or not, I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume that it would be intentional.

 

Look, if people are dying being killed by an escalator, they most likely deserved it by doing something stupid. If not, my condolences.

 

We should ban cd players in cars, also. No telling how many people get in wrecks because they are flipping the station, or messing with the cd player.

Just because someone dies from something, doesn't mean it should be made illegal. Don't fuck around, and stuff like that won't happen.

I'm not arguing about the effectiveness of seat belts, I'm arguing if the government has the right to fine you for not caring for your own safety.

Well if they don't value their life then what is the point of them living? If they don't value their life then they obviously don't care if they die so why should you stop them from doing so?

Why shouldn't ignorant people face injuries? And it is a parent's responsibility to teach their children about safety, not the government's.

Is death not a good enough reason? If possible death doesn't make people wear them, then I doubt a $100 ticket will. As you can see, thousands of seat belt tickets are still given out every year, which means people don't give a fuck about the ticket. It's just a way for the government to make money.

 

The government gave us those cars. As owner, they must take the steps and precautions to make sure that the users of the cars they are loaning out receive as minimum injury, even if inevitable, as possible. This is why they stress the usage of seat belts, and generally, "Caring for your safety".
